Willingness-to-pay for energy efficient homes
Improving the energy efficiency of the housing stock is essential for decarbonising the housing sector. However, achieving large-scale improvements requires substantial private investment, underscoring the importance of housing market incentives. An extensive literature shows a positive willingness-to-pay (WTP) for housing energy efficiency. However, the methodological issue of omitted variable bias (OVB) has weakened claims of a causal effect. I…
A cross-city analysis of mobility responses to air pollution in China
We identify causal effects of air pollution on within-city mobility in China. • PM2.5 poses an average negative causal impact on within-city mobility in China. • There are substantial spatial variations underlying the PM2.5-mobility nexus. • Positive effects are observed in some cities. • The spatial heterogeneities are mainly driven by pollution and mobility levels. Understanding how air quality influences mobility patterns is crucial for effect…
From heat maps to cooling actions
MLP-ANN fuses weather and morphology to predict hourly NET across Hong Kong. • Model achieves R2=0.97, resolving diurnal and seasonal thermal stress patterns. • Summer NET peaks at 30.29°C (15:00); winter nights drop to -4.02°C (03:00). • Elevated NET concentrates in highly urbanized zones (e.g., airport, CBD). • Larger green and water patches provide the strongest localized cooling effects. Thermal stress is critical for sustainable, health-orie…
Impacts of metro network configuration on on-road traffic intensity in Chinese cities
Network-specific design features are largely overlooked in the empirical literature, despite their potential role in strengthening urban rail transit as a net transport-sector decarbonizer. To address this gap, we examine the indirect contributions of these design features to the road-to-rail mode shift in China’s urban context, taking a structural equation modeling approach. In particular, we focus on three dimensions of physical network configu…
An analytical framework of quantifying carbon emission impacts of construction and demolition waste circularity and trading
Developing a circular economy (CE) for construction and demolition waste (CDW) presents a promising pathway to decarbonize the construction industry by reducing reliance on carbon-intensive primary material production. However, most existing studies rely on life cycle assessment (LCA) approaches and treat CDW flows as isolated processes, overlooking the broader economy-wide emission consequences and distributional effects arising from complex int…
Shared E-bikes are more resilient than shared bikes to extreme temperatures
As a form of active travel, shared bike use has been challenged by climate change, particularly by the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme temperatures. Although studies indicate that shared e-bikes have the potential to reduce the barriers to cycling, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have compared the temperature resilience of shared bikes and shared e-bikes. To address this gap, we comparatively assess the effects of temperatu…
When green transportation backfires
How does industrial transformative process shape the spatial dynamics of urban development
Land-use carbon emissions and built environment characteristics
Delineating functional regions from road networks
We apply a percolation method to South Korea’s road networks and identify major urban clusters. The results show that Korea has developed a highly mono-centric spatial structure, in which the Seoul Metropolitan Area expands to northern Chungnam, far beyond the limits conventionally assumed. A percolation threshold of 1080 m is critical in delineating Korea’s functional regions, and the results at this threshold show great similarity to flow-based…
Do Covid-19 pandemic-related policy shocks flatten the bid-rent curve? Evidence from real estate markets in Shanghai
