A BIM-based carbon footprinting of earthworks in road construction process
Carbon dioxide emissions are a major component of greenhouse gases and their evaluation during the life cycle of civil infrastructures is increasingly becoming a pivotal criterion for project tendering. During construction activities, the use of heavy-duty vehicles generally accounts for most of the energy consumption. However, the CO 2 emissions deriving from earthwork machines have not been thoroughly calculated yet due to the inner complexity …
Mapping Public-Planner Conflicts in Suds Implementation Using Cultural Dimensions—A Case Study
The timely implementation of climate adaptation measures for the urban environment is essential to the creation of robust cities. Within Norway, these adaptation measures are undertaken at the municipal level. Unfortunately, the implementation of adaptation measures has lagged behind expectations, partially due to public resistance to local projects. City planners seek tools to provide insight into the priorities of residents to build consensus a…
Determining sustainability impact assessment indicators
Sustainability impact assessment (SIA) can enlighten the decision-making process for major public investment projects. This paper addresses the use of SIA on projects, and suggests that since policies constrain plans which constrain projects, it is necessary to assign SIA indicators to the strategic, tactical and operational levels. We have examined (1) what indicators are actually chosen as being the most significant and (2) how assessors should…
Dynamic Eco‐Efficiency Projections for Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Strategies at the City Level
In this article we have elaborated a consistent framework for the quantification and evaluation of eco‐efficiency for scenarios for waste treatment of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Such waste systems will play an increasingly important role in the future, as there has been for many years, and still is, a significant net increase in stock in the built environment. Consequently, there is a need to discuss future waste management strategi…
Projection of Construction and Demolition Waste in Norway
Current waste generation from the construction and demolition industry (C&D industry) in Norway is about 1.25 million tonnes per year. This article presents a procedure for projection of future waste amounts by estimating the activity level in the C&D industry, determining specific waste generation factors related to this activity, and finally calculating projections on flows of waste materials leaving the stocks in use and moving into the waste …
