  • Right-Wing Populism, Information, and Knowledge

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Logeion Filosofia da Informação•2019•References: 1

‘New media’ information technologies were recently thought to be so intrinsically different from ‘old,’ mass media, technologies that fascism would no longer be possible. Through new media information and communication technologies, the political ‘mass’ was supposedly replaced by the ‘crowd’ or the ‘swarm,’ and an old mass media replaced by a new media serving individual ‘information needs.’ However, extreme right-wing political populism and encr…

  • Documentary Fragments, Pop-Politics, and Fascism

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Logeion Filosofia da Informação•2017•References: 2

This article addresses the role of social media fragments in the return of fascist politics It argues that beside or contrary to a conscious collective intelligence emerging through the internet, a collective unconscious has seized the political space, delegitimatizing modern institutions of documentary truth based on evidence, method, and the institutional construction of facts

  • Social Media and “Crooked” Political Discourse

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Logeion Filosofia da Informação•2016•References: 1

This paper examines the relation of social media to political discourse in light of Bruno Latour’s notion of political discourse being (innately and positively) “crooked” (se courber) in his book, An Inquiry into Modes of Existence: An Anthology of the Moderns. In this book, Latour argues for a geometry of political rhetoric and its claims to truth that is the reverse of the Western philosophic tradition’s. This article looks at that geometry fro…

  • Information Ethics

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Logeion Filosofia da Informação•2015

This article was delivered as a public lecture at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, March 24, 2015. It discusses normative information and library ethics and then formal and critical information and library ethics, the latter being the preconditions to the existence of information access and user’s choices. Information professionals have strong responsibilities in creating the possibilities for information, and therefore, for truth and …

Today, I will discuss aspects of my project on the Spirit of Information. I will present part of a chapter of a new book that I am working on documentation and expression, where I discuss information as an attempt to break away from documentation during modernity and today. AARON SWARTZ E O ESPÍRITO DA INFORMAÇÃOResumo Hoje vou discutir aspectos do meu projeto sobre "O espírito da informação". Irei apresentar parte do capítulo de um novo livro em…

  • Value and the Unseen Producers

    Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•The Information Society•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article examines the problem of value in unpaid labor from the perspective of the domestic labor struggles in the Wages for Housework campaign of the early 1970s in Italy. Some of the history of this movement is recounted in regard to the question of value in capital and, importantly, beyond capital. The issues of value that are raised in this perspective by posing questions of value in domestic labor against those in digital labor are not o…

  • Network Mediated Discursive Education

    Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•The Information Society•2012

In the 1990s, knowledge management originated as a post-Fordist, information society, discourse that stressed the sociotechnical “capture” and distribution of knowledge as a sharable, information resource. Following a postindustrial model, the information/knowledge economy was seen as the leading productive sector. Today's networked systems mix information processing and retrieval and communication technologies in new ways. While such systems dem…

  • The Aleatory Encounter and the Common Name

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication Inquiry•2011

This article discusses the relation between the concepts of the Epicurean void and the aleatory encounter in Louis Althusser’s late philosophy and the concepts of kairòs and the common name (or common concept; nome comune) in Antonio Negri’s later work. It is important to consider the political efficacy of nome comune in the context of ontological commitments such as the Althusserian void and Negri’s “postmodern” landscape of “total subsumption,”…

  • (Digital) experiences

    Open Access•Ronald E Day, Hamid R Ekbia•ARTICLE•First Monday•2010

What is digital experience? This question is of interest to different discourse traditions, each of which would answer it differently. The literature in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), virtual worlds, and Artificial Intelligence, for instance, each present distinctive understandings of the concept of 'experience' and, consequently, of 'digital experience.' However, if we start with the concept of experience as a…

  • Social capital, value, and measure

    Open Access•Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Journal of the Association for…•2002

This article engages one of the most important concepts in Knowledge Management, namely, the concept of “social capital,” focusing upon the problem of measure and value in capitalism, specifically within the period and conditions of post‐Fordist production. The article engages work that has emerged from out of the Italian Workerist and Autonomist Marxist movements (as well as French post‐structuralist theory) since the 1960s, and it particularly …

  • The Modern Invention of Information

Julie Griffith, Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•Journal of Education for Library…•2002•Cited by: 19

In The Modern Invention of Information: Discourse, History, and Power, Ronald E. Day provides a historically informed critical analysis of the concept and politics of information. Analyzing texts in Europe and the United States, his critical reading method goes beyond traditional historiographical readings of communication and information by engaging specific historical texts in terms of their attempts to construct and reshape history

  • The Virtual Game

    Ronald E Day•ARTICLE•The Information Society•1999

This article critically engages the theme of the game as a model for identity, community, and the meaning and function of objects in a recent work by Pierre Levy. Two of Levy's books have recently appeared in English translation, making this a timely moment to return to this theme that resonates throughout cultural modernity, especially in the areas of business, the military, sports, and, of course today, in digital software and network design
