Golf is a global game that is dominated by technology. • (In)Fidelity

    Open Access•Noah Franken•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication Inquiry•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In this article, the narrative paradigm is applied to the documented life of Tiger Woods, viewing his story as sports folklore and public moral argument, asking, what patterns exist in his narrative? What values? And how can the narrative of Tiger Woods be described in terms of narrative rationality? Looked at as a mythic hero, Tiger feathers the line between fantasy and reality and has gone through the requisite rituals of violation and reconstr…

  • The Communicative Shape of Liveness

    Open Access•Noah Franken•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2024

This paper provides a roadmap for the application of dialectics to the study of liveness. The roadmap incorporates the utterance chain from relational dialectics theory to describe live performance in terms of the discursive interplay it generates which gives it meaning. As such, this paper addresses a stated need in the literature on liveness for theoretical development and refinement. The paper also positions itself in approaches to liveness th…

  • A Scene from the Borderlands of Translation, Transcendence, and Communicability

    Open Access•Noah Franken, Nancy Garcia•ARTICLE•Communication Studies•2023

This article presents an autoethnographic account of a scene that unfolds at the airport. In the scene, a practical problem is solved despite limitations in communication, and the scene plays out in front of a waiting area full of travelers. It centers around an elderly couple who are confused and disoriented in the midst of a predicament, and who are not fluent in English. A gate agent and another traveler who both speak Spanish help the couple …

  • Illusion of life in Bob Dylan’s “murder most foul”

    Noah Franken, Trudy L Hanson•ARTICLE•Popular Communication•2021•References: 4

This article examined the Bob Dylan song, “Murder Most Foul,” using the illusion of life rhetorical perspective. The song’s music and lyrics together speak to an American experience defined by the fallout of the JFK assassination: a public consumed with doubt, distrust, and conspiracy; however, a public that can perhaps still spark change. Overall, the song presents an incongruity between music and lyrics whereby the quietness of the music is at …

  • The missteps of a young and flustered professor in the face of a challenging graduate student

    Noah Franken•ARTICLE•Communication Education•2020

In this article, I offer a story, rendered in creative nonfiction, of my experience as a young and flustered college professor challenged by a defiant and disruptive graduate student. The story is followed by a critical reflection of the experience where I examine the role of communication and culture in regard to classroom disruptions and assess how I could have handled the situation differently, namely how I could have practiced preventive meas…

  • He Was Supposed to be With Me for the Rest of My Life”

Danielle Halliwell, Noah Franken•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Communication•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 9

The present study applied relational dialectics theory to explore the competing discourses that animate bereaved siblings’ online stories about their loss, as well as to understand how the interplay of these discourses constitutes meaning of sibling bereavement. Analysis of over 70 message board postings retrieved from online support groups revealed two main discursive struggles that characterize siblings’ experiences of grief and loss: grieving …
