  • Younger Dryas reindeer in northwest Europe

Open Access•R E Stevens, Hazel Reade et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2026

Reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ) played a central role in the subsistence strategies of Late and Final Palaeolithic populations across northern Europe, particularly during the Younger Dryas (c. 12,850–11,650 cal BP). However, while reindeer are known from securely dated Younger Dryas faunal contexts in Britain, they are not associated with archaeological assemblages, and there is currently no conclusive evidence for human presence in Britain at the…

  • Cold and arid climates experienced by Central European hunter-gatherers at Stránská skála IV during the Last Glacial Maximum

    Open Access•R E Stevens, Hazel Reade et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•Referencias: 4

Several studies have argued that human presence in Central Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) may have been restricted to brief periods of climate warming. In particular, Greenland Interstadial-2 (GI-2, c.23,300–22,800 BP), a brief warm event recorded in Greenland ice-core stratigraphy, has been associated with human activity at Central European sites such as Kastelhöhle-Nord and Y-Höhle (Switzerland), and Kammern-Grubgraben (Austria). …

  • Iso-Wetlands

    Open Access•R E Stevens, Hazel Reade et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology International•2022

Iso-Wetlands is a new, NERC-funded collaborative research project involving researchers at UCL Institute of Archaeology, the University of Leeds and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. The project is developing sulfur isotope analysis of archaeological plants and animals as a new tool for exploring hydrological conditions under which agricultural production was taking place. This development has the potential to improve understanding of wate…

  • Stable isotopes reveal dietary shifts associated with social change in Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique Knossos

    Open Access•Anna C Moles, Hazel Reade et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 28

Knossos was an important city on Crete and within Mediterranean networks in terms of trade and political status, though its status differed throughout the Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique periods. This paper uses stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis to consider whether people at Knossos had differential diets due to the social, political, cultural, and economic changes across this time frame, factoring in age, sex and social status. Sam…

  • Stable isotopes confirm the Banwell Bone Cave Mammal Assemblage Zone represents an MIS 5 fauna

    Open Access•R E Stevens, Hazel Reade•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

The position of the Banwell Bone Cave mammal assemblage zone (MAZ) in the mammalian biostratigraphy of the British Isles has been the focus of debate for decades. Dominated by fauna typical of cold environments it was originally linked to the marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 4 stadial (ca. 72–59 ka). Subsequently it was argued that the Banwell Bone Cave MAZ more likely relates to the temperate interstadial of MIS 5a (ca. 86–72 ka). It is envisio…

  • Magdalenian and Epimagdalenian chronology and palaeoenvironments at Kůlna Cave, Moravia, Czech Republic

    Open Access•Hazel Reade, Sonja B Grimm et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 86

Kůlna Cave is the only site in Moravia, Czech Republic, from which large assemblages of both Magdalenian and Epimagdalenian archaeological materials have been excavated from relatively secure stratified deposits. The site therefore offers the unrivalled opportunity to explore the relationship between these two archaeological phases. In this study, we undertake radiocarbon, stable isotope (carbon, nitrogen and sulphur), and ZooMS analysis of the a…

  • Socioeconomic differences in diet

Open Access•Kirandeep Dhaliwal, Kirandeep Kaur Dhaliwal et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 54

OBJECTIVES: Historical evidence suggests that social hierarchy pervaded all aspects of society in post-Medieval England. This study uses stable isotope analysis to explore the extent to which socioeconomic status and sex affected the dietary habits of the inhabitants of post-Medieval Chichester. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios were measured on 40 human burials from the post-Medieval site of St. Michael's Litten (C…

  • The Cyrenaican Prehistory Project 2010

    Open Access•G Barker, Annita Antoniadou et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2010•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 14

The paper reports on the fourth (2010) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project, and on further results of analyses of artefacts and organic materials collected in the 2009 season. Ground-based LiDar has provided both an accurate 3D scan of the Haua Fteah cave and information on the cave's morphometry or origins. The excavations in the cave focussed on Middle Palaeolithic or Middle Stone Age ‘Pre-Aurignacian’ layers below the base…
