  • Spatial patterns of urban population growth-shrinkage differentiation in China and their associations with multidimensional flow networks

Yifei Wang, Junxian Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2026

Urban population growth and shrinkage are intertwined with cities' positions in wider systems of intercity relations. This study examines 330 prefecture-level and above cities in China by combining population change during 2020–2023 with three intercity networks observed in 2023: transportation mobility, online-search attention, and patent collaboration. Spatial analysis and social network analysis are used to characterize population and network …

The management of international students has become a new challenge that China and most countries in the world must face in the context of the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) and the globalization of higher education. • Education in China, ca. 1840-present

Meimei Wang, Bas Van Leeuwen et al.•BOOK•Education in China, ca.…•2021

In Education in China, ca. 1840–present Meimei Wang, Bas van Leeuwen and Jieli Li offer a description of the transformation of the Chinese education system from the traditional Confucian teaching system to a modern mode. In doing so, they touch on various debates about education such as the speed of the educational modernization around 1900, the role of female education, and the economic efficiency of education. This description is combined with …

  • Fenjiashu

Open Access•Meimei Wang, Bas Van Leeuwen•ARTICLE•Australian Economic History Review•2021

Despite the existence of a rich literature on Chinese partial household division, there is still limited evidence of its effect on land and capital accumulation and well‐being. In this study, contrary to the dominant view, we find that household property size peaked around 1800s–1830s, suggesting that equal‐share system did not necessarily lead to land fragmentation. We find evidence that this rise in farm sizes is related to the opposing forces …

  • Intergenerational Factors Influencing Household Cohabitation in Urban China

Open Access•Meimei Wang, Yongchun Yang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Family composition impacts individual consumption habits, which may potentially transform urban integral space structure. Due to the reform in the housing system at the end of the 1990s and increases in residents' income, houses became more affordable, and intergenerational household cohabitation is no longer the primary pattern. Nonetheless, as families change, it still remains an important form of family composition. Intergenerational support i…
