Policy perspective for achieving the NDCs commitment
The present study attempts to evaluate the transition of cooking and heating energy sources in Indian households and also identifies factors attributing to transition based on an NSSO survey of 2.76 lakh households using a multinomial logit model. We observed that the energy transition from firewood to clean fuel in Indian households follows the “fuel stacking theory” rather than the “energy ladder theory”. The results of the Multinomial Logit sh…
Assessment of Above‐Ground Biomass and Soil Organic Carbon Stock Using Taxonomical and Functional Trait Diversity and Management Implications for Land Management in Degrading Temperate Forests of Hima…
The present study aims to analyze the relationship between aboveground biomass (AGB) and soil organic carbon (SOC) with plant traits and tree diversity of the 17 forest types of the temperate Himalayas. Leaf and stem traits, along with carbon, were measured across all the forests using 10 random 0.01 ha plots in each forest. The structural equation models for community weighted mean (CWM) and functional divergence (FDvar) were developed separatel…

Characteristics and Framework for Assessing Supply and Demand Relationship for Ecosystem Services Using a Trade‐off and Synergy Lens
Ecosystem services (ESs) are a pivotal interface between ecological and societal systems. Comprehending the balance between what nature offers and society demands is indispensable for fostering human prosperity. This study seeks to fill the gaps in existing knowledge, including inconsistencies in terminology, limited exploration of driving mechanisms, and the lack of a comprehensive management strategy framework in ES supply and demand research. …
Modeling soil respiration
Soil respiration rates differ significantly between Sal and Chir-Pine forests across seasons. • Soil moisture is the primary driver of Rs in Sal, while rainfall dominates in Chir-Pine. • The findings improve carbon pool projections, which are important for climate change and forest management. Soil respiration (Rs) is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions from terrestrial ecosystems. While numerous studies have examined its environmental…
Managing multiple stressors for sustainable livelihoods in dryland ecosystems
Communities in dryland ecosystems face multiple stressors that threaten their livelihood resilience. While community resilience in socio‐ecological systems is largely determined by access to and sustainable management of natural resources, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. This study, which uses grounded theory integrated with discourse analysis, aims to contribute addressing this knowledge gap. First, we explore global liter…

Attributable factors for climate change adaptation among urban informal settlers of a least developed country, Bhutan
Soil organic carbon estimation along an altitudinal gradient of chir pine forests in the Garhwal Himalaya, India
Chir pine ( Pinus roxburghii , Sarg.) forests are dominant in the Indian Himalayan region and act as a huge carbon (C) sink. However, measuring the C sink in soil is complex and time‐intensive, and therefore the present study attempts to estimate the soil organic carbon (SOC) through a remote sensing (RS) approach. We estimated SOC stock of chir pine forests along an altitudinal gradient at three soil depths (0–30, 30–60 and 60–100 cm) in the Gar…
An Overview of the functioning of Temperate Forest Ecosystems with Particular Reference to Himalayan Temperate Forest
Plant functional traits (PETs) are an important indicator of structure and function of forest ecosystem. However, the succinct accounting of the linkages across the various forest types are lacking across the literature. Therefore, the objective of the study was to synthesize current knowledge about and ecosystem function and services along with their linkages to PFTs in temperate forest ecosystem. A systematic literature review with appropriate …

Ecosystem Services Analysis and Design through Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Planning at a Neighbourhood Scale
The new frontiers of sustainable cities should focus on urban planning tools and strategies that are able to integrate ecosystem services in urban development. An important step could include the design of nature-based solutions (NbSs) for introducing important ecological functions aiding human well-being and mitigating the loss of soil. In this study, we propose a methodology to analyse, in a spatial way, the effect of land use scenarios generat…
The role of information infrastructure for climate change adaptation in the socio-ecological system of the Central Himalaya
The present study intends to understand and disclose the role of information infrastructure in climate change adaptation and its underlying barriers in the communities of socio-ecological system (SES) in the Central Himalaya. The study makes use of primary data in its research methodology which comprises the use of questionnaires, oral interviews, and review of relevant literature. The data were collected using a questionnaire-based survey from 8…
Whose voices, whose choices? Pursuing climate resilient trajectories for the poor
Climate Resilient Trajectories are routes to development progress that take into account aspects of climate change adaptation and mitigation in a sustainability context, offering a way to explicitly consider impacts of development and climate change choices on different sectors, scales, and socio-economic effects. Due to their scope and relevance, Climate Resilient Trajectories are of great interest to climate scientists, governments and the priv…
