  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Geological and Archaeological Chert from Southern Ontario

    Open Access•Alicia L Hawkins, Erin Tourigny et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) may provide a low-cost, minimally destructive method for sourcing archaeological cherts in Ontario. In this article we outline a study to characterize chert samples from geological sources in Ontario and to identify the raw material of a small number of archaeological specimens from the late sixteenth century A.D. Neutral Iroquoian Emmerson Springs site. We compare our results with those from an ear…

  • Geoarchaeology and new research at Jerf al-Ajla Cave, Syria

    Open Access•P J Julig, Darrel G F Long et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1999•References: 14

This study reviews geoarchaeological research on several Paleolithic sites in the Syrian steppe-desert, and reports on renewed geoarchaeological investigations at the cave site of Jerf al-Ajla, near the oasis town of Palmyra in central Syria. Major Middle Paleolithic complexes are associated with extensive exposed Eocene and Cretaceous chert-bearing formations, particularly at sites near permanent water sources. Renewed field investigations at Je…
