Analysis of the 39 Oxidizable Carbon Ratio Dates from Mound A, Mound B, and the Village Area at the Calvin Davis or Morse Mounds Site (41SY27)
We discuss the analysis of 39 Oxidizable Carbon Ratio (OCR) dates obtained from the Late Caddoan Morse Mounds site (41SY27), in the far eastern part of the state of Texas. This is one of the largest OCR dating studies completed in Northeast Texas. We also considered how soils behave as living, open systems and provide a brief introduction to the OCR Carbon Dating procedure. Data from close-interval sampling of the soil column describe the soil's …
The OCR carbon Dating procedure in Australia
Dates obtained using the newly developed absolute dating technique, the OCR Carbon Dating procedure, from an Aboriginal rockshelter site in the southeast Kimberley Western Australia, have been paired with conventional radiocarbon determinations to assess its usefulness in estimating the ages of soils in Australian archaeological contexts. The OCR procedure measures the site-specific rate of biodegradation of organic carbon in soils, which under m…
Asking More than Where
Contract archaeology accounts for the majority of archaeological studies conducted in Vermont. As these studies serve the development community, the focus of investigation has been to identify and avoid sites, not to research and evaluate the information they contain. Native-American site locational models have limited application because they are based primarily on the landforms' proximity to water. The Archaeology Consulting Team is developing …
The Oxidizable Carbon Ratio (OCR)
Since its development as a dating tool, archaeologists have struggled with the interpretation of radiocarbon data due to its limitations in accuracy and precision. These limitations are presented and reviewed in terms of how archaeologists might resolve some of the problems in using this data. A new procedure, the OCR, is introduced as a means of improving the interpret-ability of radiocarbon data, and as a potential solution to some of the more …
