Confessions Of A (Somewhat) Reluctant Consultant
This essay really is about a protracted and painful transition from academic and teacher to consultant and researcher, but first, I want to get a few things off my chest. If you can stand some wholly relevant whine at the outset, stay with me, but if not, just skip to the third section
Driving Themselves to Drink
Despite the continuing problem of repeat drunk driving (DUI) offenders, little is known of the characteristics of this population. This article reports findings from qualitative interviews with 12 incarcerated men who had been convicted for 5 or more DUIs. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics, patterns of substance abuse, treatment history, attitudes toward positive behavioral change, and recommendations for improving treatment are desc…
The Collectors of Lost Souls
Epilogue
A three‐years‐long, multi‐sited, multi‐method study conducted throughout Papua New Guinea by the Institute of Medical Research revealed a staggering prevalence of sexually transmitted disease (STD) that threatens an already fragile political‐economy and health services delivery system. Logistics, methodological complexities, and political and especially religious sensitivities hampered conduct of such research. Extremely little HIV social researc…
The Many Sexes of Risk
That potential pathogens transit to and through body parts and fluids of densely connected individuals belonging to highly mobile ethnic groups shows how relevant to health is the study of sexual networking. Five recent books show sexual networking has quickened owing to labor migration, poverty, religious double standards, militarism, tourism, and nation building. Gender conventions and sexual practice in Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, and Papua N…
Examining White Counselor Trainees’ Reactions to Racial Issues in Counseling and Supervision Dyads
This study examined the reactions of White counselor trainees to hypothetical, provocative, cross-racial counseling and supervision dyads. It employed a qualitative methodology of inquiry to explore the underlying dynamics associated with cross-racial counseling and supervision dyads. Working with a sample of 8 White male and female counselor trainees, a focus group interview was conducted using vignettes that depicted racial issues in counseling…
Examining the Reactions of White, Black, and Latino/a Counseling Psychologists to a Study of Racial Issues in Counseling and Supervision Dyads
To Be Young, Female, and “Normal”
Re-embodying Subjects in the Medical Humanities
Sites of Desire, Economies of Pleasure
This is an examination of erotic encounters between European, Asian and Pacific people. These essays explore how sexual practice and sexual meanings have been constructed across cultural borders in Thailand, the Philippines, Burma/Myanmar, Japan, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Polynesian islands. Regarding sexuality as embedded in a complex social and political world structured and saturated by gender, race and class relations, these scholars cha…
Caught Between Structure and Agency
Luise White's (1991) framework for studying prostitution empirically, in terms of its "labor forms," uncovers the structure and function of "sex industries." In this essay I describe and analyze four such labor forms based upon fieldwork conducted during 1990-92 on Dam island, capital of Papua New Guinea's Western Province. Those forms are: 1) family, 2) freelance, 3) sex broker, and 4) outdoor bush. Amidst these different forms of sexual network…

The Dark Side to Donovanosis
Brothels, Bamu, and Tu Kina Bus in South Coast New Guinea
The paper describes the unfolding situation of prostitution on Daru Island, Western Province, Papua New Guinea, a practice that is also growing elsewhere on a worldwide scale. Owing to the seriousness of the problem and to the character of the fieldwork, understudied as it is in anthropology, the author claims that to set the field material merely within the context of the debate between relativism and ethnocentrism will not get us very far. He r…
Tales of the Field
The Philosophy of Shared Poverty
This paper discusses, and comprehensively rejects, Geertz' concept of 'involution' as applied to the historical sociology of rural development in Indonesia. Geertz' analysis is outlined, together with the criticisms it has occasioned; the paper then moves to a consideration of central methodological issues in the involution debate. It concludes with a critique of Geertz' use of the concept of Culture as confusing rather than clarifying the issues…
