Setting the basis for a high-resolution record of the late Quaternary to present climate variability from Castiglione maar, central Italy
The AMUSED (A MUltidisciplinary Study of past global climatE changes from continental and marine archives in the MeDiterranean region) project aims at improving knowledge of late Quaternary climate variability and its expressions in different geological settings of the Mediterranean region. In this framework, the Castiglione maar, in the Colli Albani Volcanic District, central Italy, was selected for acquiring a high-resolution and geochronologic…
The Effects of Immigrant Status and Age at Migration on Changes in Older Europeans’ Health
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between natives and immigrants in regard to transition probabilities among health states in self-rated health (SRH), depression, and activities of daily living for middle-aged and older adults in Europe. The Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement allows us to investigate how successfully the immigrants have aged from 2004 to 2011 compared to natives, according to country of origin and ag…
High-resolution aeromagnetic survey of Calabria (Southern Italy)
We present a 1:350,000 high-resolution magnetic anomaly map of Calabria (Southern Italy), obtained by merging the results from two low-altitude aeromagnetic surveys performed in southern and northern Calabria. Magnetic anomalies of Calabria are of low intensity, and mostly range from 11 to –9 nT. Northern Calabria is characterized by positive anomalies in the Tyrrhenian margin (Coastal Chain) that turn into negative values moving eastward in the …
Employment Condition, Economic Deprivation and Self-Evaluated Health in Europe
Background : The mixed empirical evidence about employment conditions (i.e., permanent vs. temporary job, full-time vs. part-time job) as well as unemployment has motivated the development of conceptual models with the aim of assessing the pathways leading to effects of employment status on health. Alongside physically and psychologically riskier working conditions, one channel stems in the possibly severe economic deprivation faced by temporary …
Health and income inequalities in Europe
Apple intake and cancer risk
Objective Conflicting results on the association between fruit consumption and cancer risk have been reported. Little is known about the cancer preventive effects of different fruit types. The present meta-analysis investigates whether an association exists between apple intake and cancer risk. Design Relevant observational studies were identified by literature search (PubMed, Web of Science and Embase). A random-effect model was used to estimate…
Garlic consumption and colorectal cancer risk in man
Objective Colorectal cancer shows large incidence variations worldwide that have been attributed to different dietary factors. We conducted a meta-analysis on the relationship between garlic consumption and colorectal cancer risk. Design We systematically reviewed publications obtained by searching ISI Web of Knowledge, MEDLINE and EMBASE literature databases. We extracted the risk estimate of the highest and the lowest reported categories of int…
Estimating the Smoking Ban Effects on Smoking Prevalence, Quitting and Cigarette Consumption in a Population Study of Apprentices in Italy
It is estimated that the Italian smoking ban generally had no effect on smoking prevalence, quitting ratio, or cigarette consumption of apprentices. However, when the estimates were applied to subpopulations, significant effects were found: -1% in smoking prevalence, +2% in quitting, and -3% in smoking intensity of apprentices with at least a diploma
Differences in Birthweight Outcomes
We find that the birthweight of second-borns is significantly higher than that of first-borns. Statistically significant effects are related with a longer gestational age, an increased number of visits during the pregnancy, and the gender of infants. On the other hand, we do not observe any significant effect related with mother’s age and with other characteristics of interest
Employment status and perceived health condition
Health inequalities between permanent workers and job seekers widen over time for male and young workers, and arise in the north of the country as well
P1-162 Planned caesarean section assessment in an Italian region
Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the impact of planned caesarean section (PCS) and investigate variation in its use in 11 hospital maternity services in the Umbria region (Central Italy). Methods A population-based study using routine maternity discharge data (CEDAP) from 2007 to 2008. The study included 15 898 women (nulliparous, single cephalic, ≥37 weeks, physiological pregnancy and without fetal development defects). The outcome of t…
