  • Climate (im)mobilities in the Eastern Hindu Kush

    Open Access•Saeed A Khan, Martin Doevenspeck et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Environment•2024•References: 74

The relationship between climate, environment, and human mobility is complex as (im)mobility outcomes are influenced by multiple socioeconomic, political, and environmental factors. The current debate is focused on migration as an adaptation strategy in the face of climate change but largely ignores the immobility aspect, particularly in the Eastern Hindu Kush where mountain livelihoods are strongly dependent on local environmental conditions. In…

  • Natural Hazards under Climate Change Conditions

Open Access•Thomas Pölzler, Florian Ortner et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2022

Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of certain kinds of natural hazard events in alpine areas. This interdisciplinary study addresses the hypothetical possibility of relocating the residents of three alpine areas in Austria: the Sölk valleys, the Johnsbach valley, and the St. Lorenzen/Schwarzenbach valleys. Our particular focus is on these residents’ expectations about such relocations. We find that (1) many residents expect that…

  • Rapid lake infill following major rockfall (bergsturz) events revealed by ground-penetrating radar (GPR) measurements, Reintal, German Alps

Open Access•Oliver Sass, Michael Krautblatter et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007

The capability of GPR (ground-penetrating radar) measurements to decipher the sedimentary history of young alluvial plains is investigated. The sediment basins result from the infill of two lakes, which were dammed by high-magnitude rockfalls 400—600 and 200 years ago in an Alpine trough valley. The thickness and structure of the dammed sediments was derived from a series of longitudinal and cross profiles. In order to take advantage of both high…

  • Mass movement processes in unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments

    Open Access•Karl‐Friedrich Wetzel, Karl-Friedrich Wetzel et al.•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•2006

  • How wet are these walls? Testing a novel technique for measuring moisture in ruined walls

Open Access•O Sa, Oliver Sass et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 9

  • Rock Moisture Fluctuations During Freeze-thaw Cycles

    Oliver Sass•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2004

Electrical resistivity measurements were carried out to establish rock moisture variations at limestone rockwalls of the northern Alps. Temporal moisture fluctuations were derived from transitional resistivity measurements with the aid of data loggers, while the small-scale spatial moisture variations were fixed by 2D-geoelectrical measurements (ERT). Both methods provide evidence of an increasing hydraulic pressure level during freezing. Pore wa…
