Archaeology of forced labour in 1950s Prague
Excavations on Letná Hill uncovered a forgotten 1950s labour camp linked to Prague’s Stalin Monument. Preserved architecture and artefacts reveal the daily life of workers, driven less by physical violence than by ideological pressure and social consequences, shedding new light on forced labour and material culture in communist Czechoslovakia
Mapping urban assemblages
Although urban archaeological research yields a wealth of information, interpreting material culture in a complex context complicates the estimation of the artefact-space-human relationship. Drawing on the archaeological research on active (still operating) sites, this study presents a simulation of those dynamics using as an example a vibrant flea market, which is considered a space with a condensed assemblage of relationships between people and…
Recent advances in imaging of hillfort fortifications by 2D/3D/4D electrical resistivity tomography compared to excavations
3D ERT is able to obtain volumetric information on fortifications; 4D ERT can significantly enhance ERT interpretation of ramparts and ditches
Fish Bone Finds from the Archaeological Excavation of the Early Mediaeval Hillfort in Prague-Královice
This contribution analyses the remains of fish from archaeological excavation in the area of the fortified early mediaeval centre in Prague-Královice (12th–early 13th centuries). An analysis of the available material indicates a regular and widespread consumption of fish, which was, however, only a dietary supplement. Catfish (Silurus glanis) with a body length of about 75 cm, and pike (Esox lucius) with body lengths of about 45 cm and 60 cm were…
Archaeology of the main waste dump of the Sauersack/Rolava POW camp in the Ore Mountains (NW Bohemia)
The Sauersack/Rolava POW camp from World War II is the first archaeologically investigated site of its kind in Bohemia, and thanks to its highly authentic state of preservation it can be considered one of the best archaeologically known internment facilities in Europe. Nevertheless, new findings continue to emerge, including information from illegal treasure hunters. In 2022, the main settlement waste dump was identified and due to the threat to …

The Rediscovery of a Labour Camp on the Construction Site of the Stalin Monument in Prague
The rediscovery of a labour camp on the construction site of the Stalin Monument in Prague in spring 2021 was the result of a construction project of the Municipality of Prague. Until then, the existence of this specific site had not been reflected neither in the historical memory of the place nor in the literature devoted to the monstrous monument (dismantled in 1962), which was both a superb work of art and engineering and the most significant …
The materiality of forced labour
The paper deals with archaeological, osteological and archaeobotanical analysis of the artefacts and ecofacts obtained by excavation in waste landfills from the Second World War. The settlement waste was produced by three communities with different social status, which were connected with the Rolava mining and processing plant in the Ore Mountains in western Bohemia. The plant was built to supply the war industry of the Third Reich with non-ferro…
Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic. Current state and future visions of virtual research tools in the Czech Republic
The Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic (AMCR) project will soon be finished and one chapter of building digital infrastructures in the Czech Republic will be closed. It is a natural occasion to evaluate national state-of-the-art in dealing with Digital Culture Heritage, particularly archaeological data. It is a also good time to summarise our knowledge about using digital tools and to outline prospects of development for the coming years. W…
