    David H Rosen•ARTICLE•Jung Journal•2014

This article reviews The Life and Ideas of James Hillman, Volume I of the official biography of James Hillman by Dick Russell. This text is worth reading and is of historic importance. It concerns Hillman's ancestry and growth and development during his early years. With Jung's support, Hillman was the first Director of Studies at the Jung Institute. It deals with Hillman's education, travels, loves, family, work, and disappointments, and include…

  • Synchronicity at the Crossroads: Frank McMillan Jr., Forrest Bess, and Carl Jung

    Frank N McMillan, David H Rosen•ARTICLE•Jung Journal•2012

In 1954, Frank McMillan Jr. met Forrest Bess, an eccentric artist, in a moment of synchronicity. Bess had just received a letter from C. G. Jung and McMillan recognized the importance of Bess’s reaction. Thirty years later, McMillan donated funds to Texas A&M University to create the world’s first professorship in analytical psychology. Stirred by a childhood dream of a lion, McMillan was launched on an archetypal quest for meaning, and, in an un…

  • Empirical study of Kanji as archetypal images: Understanding the collective unconscious as part of the Japanese language

    Open Access•Milena Sotirova‐Kohli, David H Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Analytical Psychology•2011•References: 25

Chinese characters originated as a semiotic system independent from spoken language and in the Japanese language they function non-phonetically with speakers exhibiting right-hemispheric advantage in their processing. We tested the hypothesis that Chinese characters are archetypal images and therefore part of our collective unconscious memory. Our study builds on the first empirical study of archetypal memory of Rosen et al. (1991) which demonstr…

  • Longitudinal Effects of Hope on Depression and Anxiety: A Latent Variable Analysis

    Open Access•Randolph C Arnau, David H Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2007

This study tested the prospective effects of hope on depression and anxiety using a longitudinal design. A sample of 522 college students completed self‐report measures of hope, depression, and anxiety at three time points, with 1‐month delays between administrations. Structural equation modeling was employed to test two cross‐lagged panel models of the reciprocal effects of the Agency and Pathways components of hope on depression and anxiety. Re…

  • The Role of Existential Meaning as a Buffer Against Stress

    Open Access•Nathan Mascaro, David H Rosen•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•2006•Cited by: 16•References: 36

An ethnically diverse sample of 143 college undergraduates was used to test the hypothesis that a sense of existential meaning buffers against the effect of stress on depression and hope. Spiritual meaning as measured by the Spiritual Meaning Scale and personal meaning as measured by the framework subscale from the Life Regard Index-Revised were significantly negatively correlated with depressive symptoms and positively correlated with hope. Spir…

  • Existential Meaning's Role in the Enhancement of Hope and Prevention of Depressive Symptoms

    Open Access•Nathan Mascaro, David H Rosen•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2005•Cited by: 29

The authors confirmed that existential meaning has a unique relationship with and can prospectively predict levels of hope and depressive symptoms within a population of college students. Baseline measures of explicit meaning (i.e., an individual's self-reported experience of a sense of coherence and purpose in life) and implicit meaning (i.e., an individual's self-reported embodiment of the factors that are normatively viewed as comprising a mea…

  • Picture interpretation and Jungian typology

    Open Access•Derek P Bergeron, David H Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Analytical Psychology•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This study examined a Jungian picture interpretation schema, which utilizes a specific quadrant method. This proposed schema, which is used in training at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zürich, attaches significance to specific areas of a drawing. The upper left of a drawing is associated with the father; the lower left with the unconscious; the lower right with the mother; and the upper right with the future. Three questions served as the foci of t…

  • Reliability and validity of scores from the Singer‐Loomis Type Deployment Inventory

    Open Access•Randolph C Arnau, David H Rosen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Analytical Psychology•2000•References: 5

This paper focuses on the Singer-Loomis Type Deployment Inventory (SL-TDI), which is an alternative to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The SL-TDI utilizes a continuous, non-forced choice format and therefore is a more accurate representation of Jung's personality theory of psychological types. The purpose of the study reported here is to evaluate the reliability and validity of scores from the SL-TDI. Specifically, the goals were to (a) p…
