Contradiction, Cultural Tourism, Development and Social Structure in Nepal
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a testable model of the effects of development-related, cultural tourism on local social structures in Nepal and elsewhere. I first became aware of a unique Nepalese tourist program in the village of Sirubari in the summer of 2001, when I led a group of undergraduate students on a summer field school to Nepal that included a visit there. Wives' Roles in Fertility Decision‐Making Among Nepalese Caste‐Hindus
The study of wives' roles in fertility decision‐making among 97 caste‐Hindu women from West Central Nepal reveals wide variation on four issues: (1) Are fertility decisions conscious? (2) Who makes fertility decisions? (3) Do ideal family size and composition affect fertility decisions? and (4) Are economic, social, cultural or health factors the major motives in fertility decisions? Findings suggest a greater level of variation in and complexity…

A nine-year representative, longitudinal study of 1,598 urban elderly shows that two to eight times as many impaired or disabled are cared for in the community as in institutions. Younger age, male gender, better income, and living with others, especially children, favor continuing care in the home
