  • Syrian Refugees’ Participation in Language Classes: Motivators and Barriers

Open Access•Nicole Ives, Anna Oda et al.•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 22

Resettlement country language literacy facilitates integration and counteracts social and economic marginalization. Thus, access to language learning is a social justice issue. Resettled refugees in Canada are eligible for free English/French language training. Between 2015-2017, Canada resettled 47,735 Syrian refugees. We explored predictors of language class participation for Syrian refugees, examining data from 1915 adult Syrian refugees in go…

  • Sustaining the Private Sponsorship of Resettled Refugees in Canada

Open Access•Jennifer Hyndman, Johanna Reynolds et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Dynamics•2021•Cited by: 10•References: 4

For more than 40 years, groups of Canadian residents have raised funds and offered their time and energy to support over 325,000 refugee newcomers to Canada through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. In 2020, targets for private refugee sponsorship in the Canadian context were double the number of government-assisted refugees. Private sponsorship is therefore an important focus of analysis in relation to refugee resettlement, representi…

  • On the Outside Looking In: The Precarious Housing Situations of Successful Refugee Claimants in the GVRD

    Open Access•Kathy Sherrell, SILVIA D'ADDARIO et al.•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2007•Cited by: 9

Access to affordable and adequate housing is a key step in the successful integration of newcomers. While some immigrants are able to transition into home ownership quite rapidly, other newcomers are finding it increasing difficult to access basic shelter. There is little systematic knowledge about the extent of homelessness among immigrants and refugees in Greater Vancouver. This paper details the findings of a 2005 study entitled The Profile of…

  • Restricted Access: The Role of Social Capital in Mitigating Absolute Homelessness among Immigrants and Refugees in the GVRD

    Open Access•SILVIA D'ADDARIO, Silvia D’Addario et al.•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2007•Cited by: 11

The housing patterns of newcomers mark a primary indicator for their successful integration. However, different groups of people have varied access to the stock of housing in Canada. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role that social capital plays in housing trajectories of immigrants with particular attention to the experiences of refugee claimants. In this paper we draw upon the results of a 2004–2005 study on the profile of absolute …

  • Global Minds, Local Bodies: Kosovar Transnational Connections Beyond British Columbia

    Open Access•Kathy Sherrell, Jennifer Hyndman•ARTICLE•Refuge Canada s Journal on Refuge•2006•Cited by: 4

In 1999, 905 Kosovar refugees settled in the province of British Columbia (BC) in Canada. Despite their sudden and forced departure, many have maintained contact with and returned to visit Kosovo/a. We contend that these transnational links are different for refugees than for other classes of immigrants. In this case, “refugee transnationalism” refers to the social, cultural, economic, and political relations that Kosovar refugees in Canada keep …

  • Similarities of SP-, NKA- and NKB-induced currents in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons

    Open Access•Daniel Hiebert, Yun-Lei Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Brain Research•2003

Tachykinin (TK; including substance P (SP), neurokinin A (NKA) and neurokinin B (NKB))-induced currents (I(TK)s) were studied in freshly isolated rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons using whole-cell patch clamp recording and repatch techniques. All the three I(TK)s manifested features of fast activating kinetics, such as short latency and fast tau(on) and tau(off), and very slow desensitization. The concentration-response relationships for TKs…
