Evidence for the diet and habitat of two late Pleistocene mastodons from the Midwest, USA
We analyzed intestinal contents of two late-glacial mastodons preserved in lake sediments in Ohio (Burning Tree mastodon) and Michigan (Heisler mastodon). A multi-proxy suite of macrofossils and microfossils provided unique insights into what these individuals had eaten just before they died and added significantly to knowledge of mastodon diets. We reconstructed the mastodons’ habitats with similar multi-proxy analyses of the embedding lake sedi…
Geochronology of Betula extensions in pollen diagrams of Alpine Late-glacial lake deposits: A case study of the Late-glacial deposits of the Gasserplatz soil archives (Vorarlberg, Austria)
Direct terrestrial–marine correlation demonstrates surprisingly late onset of the last interglacial in central Europe
An interdisciplinary study of a small sedimentary basin at Neumark Nord 2 (NN2), Germany, has yielded a high-resolution record of the palaeomagnetic Blake Event, which we are able to place at the early part of the last interglacial pollen sequence documented from the same section. We use this data to calculate the duration of this stratigraphically important event at 3400 ± 350 yr. More importantly, the Neumark Nord 2 data enables precise terrest…
The past and present occurrence of Elatine and implications for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions
The past and present occurrence of Elatine hydropiper L. (eight-stamened waterwort), E. hexandra (Lapierre) DC. (six-stamened waterwort) and E. triandra Schkuhr (three-stamened waterwort) in the Netherlands is discussed. It has proved possible to distinguish the slightly curved seeds of E. hexandra and E. triandra in subfossil material on morphological grounds. E. hexandra is the most common species at present, but subfossil finds are confined to…
Plant remains from the Kreftenheye Formation (Eemian) at Raalte, The Netherlands
The Kreftenheye Formation is a fluviatile deposit occurring in the central part of the Netherlands. The present study deals with the plant remains found in suction-dredged bulk samples from its largely Eemian Zutphen Member, a clayey sediment formerly known as the clay–peat bed or the Salvinia bed. It reports the discovery of a large number of galls induced by the asexual generation of the currently southeast European oak gall wasp Andricus hunga…
A tribute to Corrie Bakels on the occasion of her 65th birthday
This is a special issue of Vegetation History and Archaeobotany (VHA) and therefore gets a special introduction: as some of you may realise, Prof
Utilisation de mousse comme dégraissant dans des céramiques néolithiques de France et de Belgique
A plant temper commonly used in France and Belgium in the Epi-Rössen and Michelsberg cultures has been identified. This is a mixture of moss mainly composed of Neckera crispa Hedw. Its experimental use has confirmed observations made on archaeological finds. The sequence of successive cultures using this temper, often in association with another temper consisting of fire-splintered flint, is discussed. The article provides an opportunity to under…
