The open-air site La Sénétrière and the Gravettian in the southern Burgundy (Saône-et-Loire, France)
Still no archaeological evidence that Neanderthals created Iberian cave art
Tool mark analyses for the identification of palaeolithic art and modern graffiti. The case of Grottes d’Agneux in Rully (Saône-et-Loire, France)
Signs associated with figurative representations Aurignacian. Examples from Grotte Chauvet and the Swabian Jura

The Use of Ochre and Painting During the Upper Paleolithic of the Swabian Jura in the Context of the Development of Ochre Use in Africa and Europe
While the earliest evidence for ochre use is very sparse, the habitual use of ochre by hominins appeared about 140,000 years ago and accompanied them ever since. Here, we present an overview of archaeological sites in southwestern Germany, which yielded remains of ochre. We focus on the artifacts belonging exclusively to anatomically modern humans who were the inhabitants of the cave sites in the Swabian Jura during the Upper Paleolithic. The pai…

The Châtelperronian of Germolles (Grotte de la Verpillière I, Mellecey, Saône-et-Loire, France)
The Grotte de la Verpillière I in Germolles (Saône-et-Loire, France) has yielded an archaeological sequence from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Gravettian period. This contribution focusses on the Châtelperronian lithic industry, covering 150 years of research. From a techno-typological point of view, all known lithic objects presumably dating to this period are subject of this investigation. This study includes in-situ observations of Châtelperr…
From France to Saxony – Painted pebbles from Le Mas d’Azil (Ariège) in the archaeological collections from Saxony
This contribution presents about 30 painted pebbles from Le Mas d’Azil which have been recently detected in the Staatliches Museum für Archäologie à Chemnitz (Germany). This study retraces the history of these pieces since their discovery at the site and demonstrates that they have been directly donated, in 1899, by the excavator Édouard Piette to the royal collection of prehistory at Dresden. The identification of their origin makes it unlikely …

Regional ontologies in the Early Upper Palaeolithic
The Aurignacian in Southern Burgundy
Since the second half of the 19th century, Southern Burgundy has constituted one of the most important regions of Early Upper Paleolithic research in France, but with a remarkable discontinuity in research after the 1950s and considerable emphasis on the site of Solutré. Beginning in the middle of the 1990s, a research team from Tübingen University directed by H. Floss has been investigating this area, building on a tradition of research started …
The Oldest Portable Art
Four cave sites in the Swabian Jura have yielded a spectacular array of portable art: Hohle Fels, Geißenklösterle, Vogelherd, and Hohlenstein-Stadel. Some of these ivory figurines are well known, and others less so. In all, about fifty such objects or fragments of objects are known from the region. They occur in the same archeological levels where have been found musical instruments (flutes) and early examples of painting. Drawing on recent resea…
Streams as Entanglement of Nature and Culture
Large river valleys have long been seen as important factors to shape the mobility, communication, and exchange of Pleistocene hunter-gatherers. However, rivers have been debated as either natural entities people adapt and react to or as cultural and meaningful entities people experience and interpret in different ways. Here, we attempt to integrate both perspectives. Building on theoretical work from various disciplines, we discuss the relations…
