  • How is multimodality used in early communication: Relationships with pragmatic function, referential-specificity level, and grammar

Open Access•María Fernández-Flecha, María Blume del Río et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2026

This study assessed if early multimodality increasingly involves more mature productions, in a pragmatic (i.e., declaratives) and referential (i.e., words) sense, and if it is associated with grammar, which would point to multimodality’s role in language development. Data is derived from the spontaneous multimodal behaviours of 8-to-28-month-old Peruvian children, along with data collected with the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Invent…

  • Pragmatic development in Peruvian children: Modality and lexical development between 8 and 15 months of age

    Open Access•María Fernández-Flecha, Andrea Junyent Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics & Cognition•2023

This study examines how 8- to 15-month-old Peruvian children 1 ( N = 18) express pragmatic functions in terms of the modality and referential-specificity level of each communicative behaviour. Results show that pragmatic functions were expressed mainly via the vocal modality, primarily with vocalisations; nevertheless, specific functional patterns were found: declaratives involved more use of words, and imperatives more use of gestures. While old…

Open Access•Mariela Resches, Andrea Junyent Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•First Language•2023

This article presents a cross-cultural comparison of the size and composition of the expressive vocabulary of young children speaking two dialectal varieties of South American Spanish. Ninety-one Peruvian and 91 Argentinian toddlers (mean age: 22.5 months), matched on gender, age and maternal education, were assessed through the respective adaptations of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories. Results revealed a vocabulary grow…

  • Gesture development in Peruvianchildren and its relationship with vocalizations and vocabulary

Open Access•María Fernández-Flecha, María Blume del Río et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2021•References: 1

We examine gestural development, and correlations between gesture types, vocalizations and vocabulary at ages 8 to 15 months, employing data from MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories for Peruvian Spanish, in the first such study with Peruvian children. Results show (1) significant change with age in the production of gesture types, with older children producing more; (2) important correlations between gesture types, and both voca…

  • Assessing child bilingualism: Direct assessment of bilingual syntax amends caretaker report

Open Access•Barbara Lust, Suzanne Flynn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Aims and objectives: In this paper we investigate measures for the evaluation of a child’s bilingualism. Methodology: We compare a caretaker report on the estimated quantity and quality of a child’s bilingualism to results from direct assessment of the bilingual child’s production of complex sentences in Korean and English. We adopt an integrated methodology in which two case studies, closely matched on caretaker report and general background, ar…

  • Syntactic Development in the L1 of Spanish-English Bilingual Children

Jennifer Austin, María Blume et al.•ARTICLE•Hispania•2013•Cited by: 2

In this exploratory study of subtractive bilingualism in Spanish-English bilingual children, we present evidence that crosslinguistic influence has a selective effect on heritage first language loss. Differences in feature strength between English and Spanish in interrogative and negative polarity item (NPI) sentences seem to affect the development of these structures in Spanish more than that of negative sentences. While the children in this stu…
