Aspects of space and place shape daily life, social structures, politics, and intimate relations among people. This article explores themes of collective memory and collective amnesia regarding the Lebanese civil war. By analyzing two narrative films, The Civilized People and In the Battlefields, made by two women directors, Randa Chahal and Danielle Arbid, I look at how films allow the Lebanese to remember the brutality of the war and confront themselves over their responsibility in it. Reconstructing Beirut: Memory and Space in a Postwar Arab City
Once the cosmopolitan center of the Middle East, Beirut was devastated by the civil war that ran from 1975 to 1991, which dislocated many residents, disrupted normal municipal functions, and destroyed the vibrant downtown district. COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO post‐civil war reconstruction efforts articulate the local and the global in Beirut, Lebanon.
