South African Courts’ Current Definition of Suitable Alternative Accommodation in Eviction Matters
South Africa’s democracy is 30 years old, and for 30 years the courts have been interpreting the right of access to adequate housing found in section 26 of the Constitution. Many parts of this right have been developed; one such development is that courts have found that the right includes a duty on the state to provide (temporary) emergency alternative accommodation in eviction matters to those facing homelessness. Throughout the years, courts h…
Preservice elementary teachers’ noticing in reflections of rehearsal and classroom enactments during practice-based methods courses across three universities
A comparison of elementary teachers' verbal supports for students in inclusive and general classroom contexts during an NGSS‐aligned science, engineering, and computer science unit
Elementary teachers are tasked with the challenge of implementing Next Generation Science Standards‐aligned projects that integrate science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science (STEM + CS) in a variety of classroom contexts. This study investigates how teachers verbally support students in two classrooms, one general education class and one inclusive class with a larger proportion of students with individualized educational…
Horizontality and Housing Rights
In the recent decision of fjm v . the United Kingdom , the ECtHR made a decision on the required protection against private evictions that threatens to water-down the protection of housing rights offered by the echr . This article sets out to determine the effect of the fjm judgment on the protection provided by Article 8, especially in matters concerning private evictions. The analysis of the case includes a discussion on whether the decision of…
A review of literature that uses the lens of the next generation science crosscutting concepts
New reforms in science education call for three‐dimensional learning by integrating disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts (CCCs). These reforms defined the new term, crosscutting concept (CCC), as a lens that has explanatory power across disciplines. To describe how researchers are examining and using the CCCs related to science teaching and learning, a literature review was conducted to identify ar…
Elementary teachers' verbal supports of science and engineering practices in an NGSS‐aligned science, engineering, and computational thinking unit
Contemporary science education frameworks identify computational thinking as an essential science and engineering practice that supports scientific sense‐making and engineering design. Despite national emphasis on teaching science, engineering, and computational thinking (NGSS Lead States, 2013), little research has investigated the ways that elementary teachers support students to engage in science and engineering practices (SEPs) within integra…
Fischer v Unlawful Occupiers
In 2017, in the case of Fischer v Unlawful Occupiers, the High Court of South Africa, Western Cape Division, was faced with a legal conundrum. Before it was an application for the eviction of 60 000 desperately poor persons from a number of privately owned properties. Due to the size of the unlawful occupation, the landowners sought an order that the municipality purchase or, alternatively, expropriate their properties. Such expropriation is allo…
