Peaceful Resistance: Advancing Human Rights and Democratic Freedoms
An innovative study that examines how peaceful, domestic tactics by individual human rights activists and organizational activists, with public support, can force an authoritarian regime to make key concessions. Robert Press explores the creation and impact of a culture of resistance. He examines how domestic pressure can be more important than foreign pressure for political reform, especially in underdeveloped, authoritarian states. This study o…

Ripples of Hope: How Ordinary People Resist Repression Without Violence
In Ripples of Hope, Robert M. Press tells the stories of mothers, students, teachers, journalists, attorneys, and many others who courageously stood up for freedom and human rights against repressive rulers—and who helped bring about change through primarily nonviolent means. Global in application and focusing on Kenya, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, this tribute to the strength of the human spirit also breaks new ground in social movement theories, …
Individual and Organizational Human Rights Activism in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Kenya
This article examines the ways individual and organizational activists peacefully resisted government repression in recent decades in three sub-Saharan Africa countries. It is based on both archival research and more than 170 interviews by the author with key activists and others in the countries at various times from 2002–2012. This qualitative study makes several contributions to the literature. First, by including individual activism as well a…
Kenya's political ‘transition’ through the eyes of its ‘foot soldiers’ for democracy and human rights (1997–2012)
This is a study of young human rights activists who provide a unique window on Kenya's recent and turbulent political history (1997–2012). The period includes the end of authoritarian rule and election of a ‘reform’ government in 2002 that expanded some human rights but abused others. Based on archival materials and periodic, multiple interviews by the author with key youth activists, the findings make three contributions to the study of human ri…
Candles in the Wind: Resisting Repression in Liberia (1979-2003)
Scholars have been extending social-movement analysis beyond its base in the industrialized West to Latin America and Asia, but rarely to Africa. Social movements resisting repression in nondemocratic settings have usually had the help of external “opportunities” or favorable circumstances. This study, however, examines a peaceful social movement in Liberia, a movement that resisted repression under two regimes, advocating for human rights and de…
The New Africa: Dispatches from a Changing Continent
In this text former Christian Science Monitor correspondent Robert Press tells his first-hand story of triumph and tragedy in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa. Featuring 90 photographs by Betty Press - whose work has appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, York Times, Time and Newsweek - the book offers a compelling account of the continent's emerging movements toward democracy. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, Press also explores the causes …
