En passant learning of music theory in choirs; teaching and teacher education implications for South African conductors
Fifteen experienced South African conductors were interviewed on the importance of Music Theory for choristers, and its inculcation. All agreed on the value of some knowledge and understanding of Music Theory. They reflected particularly on its contribution to rapid learning and satisfying performance of items in their repertoire. Although not the main purpose of rehearsal, all conductors endeavour to improve this knowledge and understanding, ill…
Artistic Senior Citizenship
Globally people are living longer and many older people have the inclination and opportunity to participate in informal and formal activities that are engaging, exciting, entertaining and fun: ‘particip-action’. Music-making in various manifestations promotes empowering and participatory engagement opportunities for seniors. Some may use such activity to improve the quality of life of people in increasingly large circles around them, thereby exte…
‘Oh Joy, Oh Rapture’
For over four decades ‘The Oily Chart Opera Company’ have annually produced and performed a Gilbert and Sullivan Savoy opera in Pretoria, South Africa. In this strictly amateur group, designed to allow busy people to participate over six to seven weeks, members undertake all the roles on stage as well as making costumes and stage sets. Unique to the group is a single music ‘coach and accompanist’ having served for 45 years and many of the current…
Singing and spirituality in a South African male voice group
Since the mid 1970s, a group of twelve business and professional members of a male singing group have continued singing together in Pretoria, South Africa. These singers were interviewed as part of a project on spirituality and well-being: music in the community. From the interview data, two overarching themes emerged, membership benefits and spiritual connections; these are discussed in this research project. Members’ views of benefits related m…
Modern African Classical Drumming
Drumming is one of the most common instrumental practices on the African continent, and forms part of various cultural music practices of different ethnic groups. In traditional African drumming societies, drumming expertise is acquired aurally-orally. As culture evolves, so does the transmission of indigenous African music. Traditional music undergoes adaptations to fit recontextualised environments, including classrooms. Modern African Classica…
The lesser-known John Blacking – as choral conductor
Relatively little is known of the choral conducting activities of Professor John Blacking (1928–1990). This is despite his worldwide fame, chiefly as a social anthropologist and later more of an ethnomusicologist, his own wide ranging writings, and the extent to which he is quoted by other writers. Yet Blacking is described as ‘marvellous’ in his conducting role for the University of the Witwatersrand choir, for which he was the first conductor a…

STTEPping in the right direction? Western classical music in an orchestral programme for disadvantaged African youth
This article looks at STTEP, an outreach project currently housed at the University of Pretoria, which concentrates on the teaching of western orchestral instruments, plus background areas such as music theory, to disadvantaged children and youth from a variety of townships around Pretoria, South Africa. STTEP’s direction can well be described as ‘right’ – pupils are already surrounded by all kinds of global phenomena, and their formal music stud…
Music Education and minority groups cultural and musical identities in the ‘newer’ South Africa
Music Education, as well as cultural and musical identities are all being renegotiated, post‐Apartheid, within the so‐called ‘newer’ rather than the commonly known ‘new’ South Africa. The developing situation with certain minority groups is particularly interesting. Education in general has undergone much change since the first democratic elections in 1994: music education specifically has been affected by such change in terms of content, deliver…
