Holding governments to account for leisure rights
Leisure is recognized as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in the World Leisure Organisation’s recently revised Charter for Leisure. However, it has been neglected in the UN’s mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation nation states’ compliance with human rights obligations under the terms of the relevant international treaties. Until very recently, leisure rights have also been neglected by the leisure research communi…
Leisure and human rights
The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) declared leisure time and cultural participation to be human rights, but the idea of leisure rights has not featured significantly in the field of leisure studies, including the sociology of leisure. The recent revision of the World Leisure Organisation’s Charter for Leisure provides an opportunity to reconsider this omission. The article comprises five main sections: an introduction to the pl…

It presents the background and underlying reasons for the revision, positions the Charter in the global human rights system, and examines its potentially significant role in leisure policy, research and practice. References are made to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which includes leisure-related rights, and the International Covenant on Ec…
A longitudinal study on leisure of Hong Kong adolescents
This longitudinal study examined the leisure of adolescents over a ten-year period starting from the last year of secondary school. Employing a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a group of 35 senior secondary students over three phases with an interval of 5 years each. Reflection on leisure during Covid-19
This paper provides an analysis of leisure during the outbreak of coronavirus, which affected the lives of people around the world. It is based on descriptions, observations, and reflections made by scholars from eleven places across five continents. Seven common issues were identified in the analysis. These are: shift to home-based activities, proliferation of online offering and use, growing need for connectivity, accentuated inequality, surviv…
Leisure in times of Covid-19
This paper is a reflection on leisure during COVID-19 in Hong Kong and Israel. It is based on observation and organized around four themes: shift to home-based pursuits, actions triggered by self-reflection, turning connectivity to connectedness, and solidarity in times of uncertainty. Adolescents’ choice and pursuit of their most important and interesting leisure activities
This study investigated the choice and pursuit of adolescents’ most important and interesting leisure activity. It is underpinned by the concept of serious leisure, recent perceptions of seriousness as a continuum and calls for incorporating contextual elements of serious activity pursuit. Leisure between Vision and Reality
Leisure education in schools
Despite the growing advocacy for implementing leisure education in schools, its application lags behind its global expectations. Unlike the US trend of “back to basics” educational philosophy which prioritizes the learning of core subjects over leisure related subjects, countries in Asia have been changing their curricula to nurture the whole person development and thus paving the way for infusing leisure education into school systems. One exampl…
Psychometric Evaluation of the Chinese Version of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (C—QTI) in Hong Kong
This study validated the Chinese version of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (C-QTI) with two samples (ns = 370 and 369) of primary school students in Hong Kong. The 48-item measure had acceptable internal consistency reliability, but the reliability coefficients of four of the scales were too low. The findings supported the validity of the circumplex model underlying the instrument and verified the ability of the measure to differentiate…

Leisure education
This paper centres on leisure education. It looks at the way leisure education has been defined, advocated, and implemented. While examining the “What”, “Why” and “How” questions of leisure education that have been mostly raised in the West, it brings to light additional perspectives from Asia. The paper points to the possible fluidity of the term “leisure education”, the sometimes all-encompassing nature of its definition, and the gap between it…

Peer Assessment of an Individual ‘s Contribution to a Group Project

One subject in the optometry course used a system which modified the group mark by a two‐part weightin…
