Competing interests of stakeholders in a policy-driven test
The operation of a large-scale test involves an array of stakeholders, each having distinct interests and concerns regarding the test’s design, administration, and impact. In this article, we adopt a sociological perspective to examine the educational and societal motives underlying two recent reforms of the College English Test (CET) in China. Launched in the 1980s during China’s opening to the world, the CET has grown into the largest language …

To copy verbatim, paraphrase or summarize – listeners’ methods of discourse representation while recalling academic lectures
It is unanimously agreed that comprehension of academic lectures is cognitively demanding; however, few studies have focused on a listener’s real-time discourse representation of a lecture. Based on the qualitative analysis of the verbal protocols, the present study investigated sixteen Chinese university students’ verbal recall of an academic mini-lecture to explore how they made sense of the lecture and represented its discourse when they recal…

Feedback engagement as a multidimensional construct
While the term feedback engagement has become a buzzword in higher education, the constructs of feedback engagement have remained inadequately investigated, and research on the conceptualization and instrumentation of feedback engagement in the literature is limited. This paper presents the development and validation of a feedback engagement scale that both reflects a prevalent multidimensional perspective of engagement in general education and i…

Implementing the Icao Language Proficiency Requirements
There are still language-related safety issues in international aeronautical radiotelephony communications. This article revisits the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) language policy, a set of language proficiency requirements mainly reflected in the ICAO Rating Scale (Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Interaction). Although the ICAO Rating Scale has been used globally to assess professional aviatio…
The pedagogical remit of test preparation
Preparation for university entrance tests now forms a significant part of international English language pedagogy, with considerable numbers of learners aiming to study abroad requiring supportive instruction. This important learning stage underpins subsequent experiences and requires further investigation, if later challenges faced by international university students are to be understood. This paper’s Japan-based research included observing an …
The effect of viewing visual cues in a listening comprehension test on second language learners’ test-taking process and performance
In this study, we examined the effect of visual cues in a second language listening test on test takers’ viewing behaviours and their test performance. Fifty-seven learners of English in Korea took a video-based listening test, with their eye movements recorded, and 23 of them were interviewed individually after the test. The participants viewed the visual cues longer than the items in the multiple-choice questions. Looking at the correct answer …
Students’ attitude to peer assessment process
Peer assessment has been frequently used to improve students’ academic writing skills. However, how to address students’ unsatisfactory attitude during the peer assessment process remains a major challenge to further improve students’ learning outcome and engagement. In our project, we implemented Interactive Peer Assessment, which comprised various components, to improve students’ attitude during the peer assessment process. One hundred and fift…
Investigating differences in test-takers’ use of cognitive and metacognitive strategies in audio-only and video-based listening comprehension test
Developing 21st century skills for the first language classroom
Given the increasing awareness of oral communication in this era of globalized collaborative learning trends, there is an imminent need to inform language educators of ways in which the under-researched oral interactional strategies are related to first language (L1) teaching. However, no consensus has yet been reached on the relationship between interactional strategy use and oral language proficiency. This study investigates the effect of oral …
Beyond the IELTS test
This case study explores the challenges that Master’s students encounter when learning to write in academic English as part of a UK postgraduate course, after having achieved the required IELTS entry score. Interviews with six Chinese and Japanese learners at different stages of the Master’s study revealed more sophisticated writing difficulties than they had previously experienced. Although students were largely managing their written work overa…
Lexical Diversity in Writing and Speaking Task Performances
In the rating scales of major international language tests, as well as in automated evaluation systems (e.g. e-rater), a positive relationship is often claimed between lexical diversity, holistic quality of written or spoken discourses, and language proficiency of candidates. This article reports a posteriori validation study that analysed a sample of the archived data of an international language test to examine empirically to what extent such r…
Reading to summarize in English and Chinese
The cognitive demands of summary writing are dependent upon the type of summary to be produced. This paper reports part of a larger study in which 157 Chinese undergraduates were asked to write summaries of extended English texts in both English and Chinese. It examines the differential effects of the use of the two languages on summarization as a measure of reading comprehension, drawing upon data from students' actual test performances as well …
Baal/CUP seminars 2007
The rationale for the seminar was primarily that there are links between language testing and assessment on one hand and applied linguistics on the other which could be mutually beneficial, but are not necessarily perceived as such. Secondly, it was suggested that research in language assessment and applied linguistics have been perceived as distinct, with the roles of language testing and assessment in applied linguistics relatively unexplored, …
Students' voices in the evaluation of their written summaries
Two kinds of scoring templates were empirically derived from summaries written by experts and students to evaluate the quality of summaries written by the students. This paper reports students' attitudes towards the use of the two templates and its differential statistical effects on the judgment of students' summarization performance. It was found that a summary consistently received higher scores when judged by the popular template, regardless …
