Is the multilingual motivational self system a unified construct or an aggregation of language-specific selves?
With the acceleration of globalisation and the increasing prevalence of multilingual education, the traditional L2 Motivational Self System (L2MSS) has shown limitations in explaining the complex motivational configurations of multilingual learners. This study aims to examine the latent structure of the Multilingual Motivational Self System (MMSS), identify distinct motivational profiles among multilingual learners, and investigate the associatio…
Impact of Personality on Linguistic and Paralinguistic Aspects of Pragmatic Acts
This exploratory study used a pragmatic performance measure and an eye-tracking measure to examine the impact of personality on L2 learners’ ability to perform pragmatic acts (routine speech acts in this study). Forty Chinese learners of English completed a video-based speaking task assessing their ability to perform a variety of routine pragmatic acts directed to their interlocutor in a video. They also completed the Keirsey’s (1998) survey asse…

Assessment of study abroad outcomes in Chinese as a second language
Participants were 109 American college students studying Chinese in a study-abroad programme in Beijing. Following Kelley and Meyer, intercultural competence was defined as cross-cultural adaptability involving four dimensions (emotional resilience, flexibility/openness, perceptual acuity and personal autonomy) and was measured with a survey. A language contact questionnaire was used to document the amount of time spent on social activities. Lang…

This study investigated a relationship between cross‐cultural adaptability and development of speech act production during a semester study abroad. Participants were 22 learners of Japanese at a J apanese university. Cross‐cultural adaptability subsuming four dimensions (emotional resilience, flexibility/openness, perceptual acuity, and personal autonomy) was measured using a 50‐item survey ( C ronbach's alpha = 0.88). Speech act production was m…

Comprehension of conversational implicature in L2 Chinese
This study examined the ability to comprehend conventional and non-conventional implicatures, and the effect of proficiency and learning context (foreign language learners vs. heritage learners) on comprehension of implicature in L2 Chinese. Participants were three groups of college students of Chinese: elementary-level foreign language learners ( n =21), advanced-level foreign language learners ( n =25), and advanced-level heritage learners ( n …

The effect of working memory, semantic access, and listening abilities on the comprehension of conversational implicatures in L2 English
This research examined the extent to which pragmatic comprehension, namely accurate and speedy comprehension of conversational implicatures, is related to cognitive processing skills and general listening abilities. Thirty-five Japanese students learning English as a second language completed five tasks: (1) a pragmatic listening test (PLT) that measured the ability to comprehend implied speakers’ intentions, (2) a phonemic discrimination test, (…
