Beyond error-driven adaptation
Recent advances in psycholinguistics increasingly frame language processing as a predictive process: listeners and readers continuously anticipate upcoming linguistic input. Deviations from those expectations—prediction errors—are assumed to stimulate both moment-by-moment processing and long-term learning. While highly influential, this view implicitly assumes that the adaptation is driven by discrepancies. Such an approach overlooks a crucial a…
Russian Children and Their Relatives
The present study revisits the well-attested phenomenon of Subject/Object Asymmetry in relative clause comprehension by monolingual Russian pre-school children. Additionally, it examines the NP-V and the V-NP word order types when the embedded NP precedes or follows the verb. Both the word orders are grammatical for Russian subject and object relative clauses alike. Object relative clause comprehension difficulty was evidenced across all the age …
Lexical comprehension and lexical literacy at the reading-spelling interface
Developmental models of reading and spelling skills are generally based on assessments of early literacy skills in young children. The literacy development of children is contingent on the concurrent development of linguistic knowledge, strategies, and functional skills. In contrast, developing literacy in adults is characterized by heterogeneous spoken proficiencies during the acquisition of L2 reading and writing skills. In the present study, w…
