The lost woodlands of the Po Plain
The Devil’s Bridge in Blera (VT, Italy) in a painting by William Turner
A new site identification is proposed for a landscape painted by J.M.W. Turner. • Geomorphological and topographic analysis refutes earlier site identifications. • Historical images were used to assess vegetation change and spatial consistency. • Key visual elements (bridge, path) were matched with real-world references. • An integrated visual approach enhances landscape interpretation in art heritage. In his constant search for inspiration, Will…
Tree-Ring Dating of Turkish Musical Instruments
Turkey has a rich music culture and different kinds of musical instruments. Production of musical instruments in Turkey involved different cultural influences and evolved over time through a master-journeyman relationship until the mid-20th Century. Despite the rich Turkish music culture, studies on the technical properties and dendrochronological dating of traditional musical instruments are still almost completely absent. Sixteen instruments ty…
The timber trade in the Vesuvian area before 79 AD as inferred from dendrochronological research at Moregine site
The substantial volume of timber recovered from the aftermath of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD offers a valuable resource for gaining insights into the timber trade during Roman times. Silver fir emerges as the dominant species in construction within the Vesuvian region. While this species once thrived more abundantly along the Apennines, it now exists only in small, isolated groups, raising the possibility that the Romans contributed to its …

Dendrochronological analysis of bowed and plucked instruments from the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, Naples
The Museo Storico Musicale of the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory of Music in Naples owns a collection of over 200 musical instruments of considerable historical importance. Within the collection, 30 bowed and plucked instruments representative of the Neapolitan violin‐making tradition were analysed dendrochronologically to date them, estimate the provenance of the wood and investigate the instruments’ construction characteristics. The values o…

Flying on wood and fabric
The Ansaldo A.1 “Balilla” biplane is of great historical interest, because it illustrates the level of development reached by the Italian aircraft industry during the last stages of World War I. To date, the airplane is kept in its original state, and it has never been restored. The aircraft is essentially made of wood and fabric. Wood in particular has been used in a very skilful way, making the airplane lightweight, yet elastic and resistant. I…
Coronavirus Lockdown as a Major Life Stressor
Temporomandibular disorders are multi-factorial conditions that are caused by both physical and psychological factors. It has been well established that stress triggers or worsens TMDs. This paper looks to present early research, still unfolding, on the relationship between COVID-19 as a major life stressor and TMDs. The main aims of this study were to: investigate the presence of symptoms related to TMDs and the time of onset and the worsening o…

Observations on Holocene subfossil tree remains from high-elevation sites in the Italian Alps
Subfossil tree remains from 38 high-elevation sites in the eastern Alps, which were mostly located in the province of Trentino, Italy, were dendrochronologically analysed. A total of 909 samples were collected, 497 of which were dated to calendar years through dendrochronology and separated into six groups. A further tree-ring series of 20 samples were cross-dated into two groups and their ages established by means of radiocarbon dating. The new …
