Tourism Resilience in Emerging Countries
The COVID-19 pandemic, compounded by political instability and natural disasters, caused a sharp global decline in travel and tourism employment, delaying recovery to pre-pandemic expenditure levels. This study explores how emerging countries such as South Africa, which showed to be particularly hit by such travel decline could enhance tourism resilience amid crises. Drawing on a robust theoretical framework of four interrelated perspectives and …
Ethical Leadership
Bibliometric science mappings, such as co‐citation analysis and bibliographic couplings, can be used as systematic literature reviews pre‐structured though citation‐related clusters, which can help better understand the inner logic of a research field. We conduct these two science mappings on the field of ethical leadership and integrate the primary results in a research framework that presents a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundati…
Impact of boardroom diversity on corporate financial performance
This study investigates the impact of boardroom diversity (BD) on firms’ financial performance (FP), drawing on economic and resource dependency theory. The study further explores the influence of strategic change (SC) on this nexus, using a six-dimensional index to measurse BD and SC. A dataset of 240 non-financial firms listed on four stock exchanges (Moscow, Shanghai, Bombay, and Pakistan) over a 13-year period (2008–2020) is analyzed employin…
Job insecurity as a mediator between fearing Covid-19 and turnover intention
Purpose The fear of COVID-19 has been identified as a significant predictor of adverse work-related outcomes. Grounded on conservation of resource theory, this study examines the impact of fear of COVID-19 on faculty members' job turnover intention (TI) and job insecurity, as well as the relationship between job insecurity and TI. Additionally, the authors investigate job insecurity as a potential mediating variable between the fear of COVID-19 a…
The why, how, and what of public policy implications of tourism and hospitality research
We synthesized policy implications of tourism and hospitality research by reviewing 12,269 articles published in 10 leading journals from 2012 to 2021. The most common rationale for policies (i.e., the why) is market failure, while the most typical role of policies (i.e., the how) is to create incentives. In addition, policies are typically hybrid and include suggestions for formal and informal institutional setups (i.e., the what). Because our r…
Promoting Sustainable Local Economic Development Initiatives
This book endeavours to outline case studies that promote sustainable Local Economic Development (LED) initiatives. It is generally believed that local governments are the foot soldiers of LED. However, this seems to be a myth, as local governments in South Africa and elsewhere have not yet fulfilled this mandate and have been struggling for several years to implement LED initiatives. The distinctive merit of this book lies in the way it combines…
Realising South Africa's National Development Plan goals
A democratic government should adhere to firm public administration principles, legal instruments, structures and mechanisms. However, providing these elements is insufficient to guarantee integrated participative service delivery. This article aims to unravel the most important elements required to create a participative governance model that fuses horizontal intra-relationships between public officials and departments and vertical interactions …
A Cross-Country Comparison of the Characteristics of Polish and South African Women Entrepreneurs
Globally, the promotion of entrepreneurship is considered vital for improved and sustained economic growth. Although the importance of entrepreneurship has been emphasised, there are still many gaps in this research field. One of these gaps includes cross-country comparisons between women entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study was to identity the most important characteristics that these entrepreneurs felt they needed to have as part of running…
