A Sweeter Music
Edward Elgar's 1907 part‐song ‘There Is Sweet Music’ (Op. 53 No. 1) is at once a ‘minor’ piece and a highly significant one that richly rewards investigation. The paper seeks to place this trend in a historical context by showing how, in much recent work, the two disciplines share both a repertory of interest to both and a number of critical methodologies. It then takes the opening measures of the first movement of Shostakovich's First …
Music Theory as Community
The paper views the Society for Music Theory as a community: both how it functions internally, and how it relates to other musical and scholarly communities. It adopts these reflections as the basis for a direction for the future
Contemporary Music Theory and the New Musicology
Continuing tensions between contemporary music theory and the new musicology suggest the need for music theorists to step back and look at their discipline in terms of the fresh perspective that the new musicology offers-a task that the following essays by Scott Burnham, Marion Guck, Matthew Brown, Joseph Dubiel, and Kofi Agawu undertake. The introduction provides an intellectual context for the essays by reflecting on the short history of modern…
