Sedimentary infill of a microtidal sand flat during the last two millennia, Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia
This study outlines the key morpho-sedimentary phases that have occurred over the last two millennia, which have significantly contributed to the infill of a microtidal sandy flat in an arid coast (Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia). To better understand the vertical sedimentary changes in relation to late-Holocene sea-level changes, two sediment trenches were excavated and analyzed. The sedimentary succession, which occurs in conjunction with the trend of …
Holocene History of the Lower Seine Estuary and the Commerce Valley Tributary (Normandy, France)
The sediment infill deposits of the Lower Commerce Valley in the Seine estuary, located near the Roman city of Juliobona (now Lillebonne, Normandy), provide valuable data on environmental changes during the Holocene, including sea‐level changes, sediment supply and anthropogenic influences. A 10‐m deep sediment core was collected from the valley deposits, and a multidisciplinary geoarchaeological approach was applied, combining geophysical survey…
Middle and Late Holocene vegetation history of the Murcia region from a new high-resolution pollen sequence from the Mar Menor lagoon
Recent hydrological variability of the Moroccan Middle Atlas Mountains inferred from microscale sedimentological and geochemical analyses of lake sediments
Study of the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of lakes provides key information on hydrological changes. In this work, we investigate Lake Azigza in the Moroccan Middle Atlas, a region that suffers from a scarcity of observational hydrological data necessary for a coherent management of water resources. Sedimentary deposits of Lake Azigza (32°58′N, 5°26′W, 1,550 m above sea level) were dated and analyzed by combining geochemical and mineralogical measu…
Late Holocene precipitation variability recorded in the sediments of Reloncaví Fjord (41°S, 72°W), Chile
We present reconstructions of late Holocene changes in the source of organic matter and siliceous export production in the Relocanví Fjord (41°S, 72°W), Northern Chilean Patagonia, based on organic carbon content, δ 13 C org , N/C ratio, diatom assemblages and biogenic silica contents from three sediment cores. The age models are based on a combination of 210 Pb profiles, AMS 14 C dating, and on the first occurrence of the diatom Rhizosolenia set…
A History of Human Impact on Moroccan Mountain Landscapes
Sedimentary record of V, U, Mo and Mn in the Pierre-Blanche lagoon (Southern France) – Evidence for a major anoxia event during the Roman period
The distribution of redox-sensitive elements (V, U, Mo, Mn) was studied in a sedimentary archive of the Pierre-Blanche lagoon encompassing 3500 years of sedimentation. Between 240 and 255 cm (i.e. between 0 and 350 cal. ad) in the core, there was a dark layer with no mollusc shells. Enrichments of V, U and Mo and depletion of Mn were observed in this layer compared with overlying and underlying sediments. This was attributed to the occurrence of …
A comparison of charcoal measurements for reconstruction of Mediterranean paleo-fire frequency in the mountains of Corsica
Fire-history reconstructions inferred from sedimentary charcoal records are based on measuring sieved charcoal fragment area, estimating fragment volume, or counting fragments. Similar fire histories are reconstructed from these three approaches for boreal lake sediment cores, using locally defined thresholds. Here, we test the same approach for a montane Mediterranean lake in which taphonomical processes might differ from boreal lakes through fr…
Years of paleostorm activity in the NW Mediterranean Sea in response to Holocene climate events
A high-resolution record of paleostorm events along the French Mediterranean coast over the past 7000 years was established from a lagoonal sediment core in the Gulf of Lions. Integrating grain size, faunal analysis, clay mineralogy and geochemistry data with a chronology derived from radiocarbon dating, we recorded seven periods of increased storm activity at 6300–6100, 5650–5400, 4400–4050, 3650–3200, 2800–2600, 1950–1400 and 400–50 cal yr BP (…
