  • Reburial of a mosaic floor discovered at Tocra (Taucheira)

    Open Access•Ahmed Buzaian, Mohamed Hashem•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2014•References: 7

A large number of mosaic floors in Cyrenaica are in poor condition and a systematic programme for the assessment of exposed mosaics followed by strategic planning for their long term preservation is long overdue and badly needed. A mosaic floor discovered at Tocra in 1972 is a prime example of a deteriorated pavement. In this case the Department of Antiquities decided to protect the mosaic by careful reburial in a methodical fashion. Preservation…

  • The Cyrenaican Prehistory Project 2011

    Open Access•Chris O Hunt, Ian Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Little is known about late Holocene environmental change in Cyrenaica. The late Holocene sequence in the Haua Fteah, the key regional site, is highly discontinuous and characterised by stable-burning deposits. The geoarchaeology of the late-Holocene cave fill of a small cave, CP1565, located close to the Haua Fteah, is described. The well-stratified sequence, dating from the fourth century AD to the present day, provides a glimpse of life at the …

  • A Forgotten Press Building at Lamluda

    Open Access•Ahmed Buzaian, Ahmed Mustapha Buzaian•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2009

Presented here are the preliminary results of the unfinished excavations conducted by Richard Goodchild in the late 1950s at Lamluda, east of Cyrene on the upper plateau of the Jebel Akhdar. One of the most interesting discoveries was a well-preserved press complex comprising a press and series of associated rooms, including a storage magazine. The evidence indicates that the complex was probably used for producing wine rather than olive oil; it …

  • Four qsur between the Wadis Islan and Samalus, Cyrenaica

    Open Access•Paul Bennett, Ahmed Buzaian et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This brief paper has been prepared to shed light on four qsur located in close proximity to one another on three different sites overlooking an important Haj and caravan route between Soluq in northwestern Cyrenaica and Tamimi to the east, on the Gulf of Bomba. Massively built in mudbrick and faced with stone, each qasr was positioned to dominate an adjacent cultivated wadi crossed by the caravan route. The qsur , with many constructional details…

This paper provides a preliminary record of a recently damaged Roman farm and late Roman fortified building ( gasr ) located in the eastern suburbs of Benghazi. The remains of the farm buildings are briefly described, together with the more substantial remains of the gasr . The site was truncated during the building of a new road, with further damage occurring during the construction of a major water main and the building of new houses. The pligh…

  • The effects of recent storms on the exposed coastline of Tocra

    Open Access•Paul Bennett, Andrew Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 4

This paper, prepared at the request of the Department of Antiquities of Benghazi, reports on severe erosion of the exposed seaward escarpment of the ancient site of Tocra after recent winter storms. A brief measured survey by the authors and comparison with a plan of the site made in 1966, demonstrated that up to 20 m of the coastline has been lost in 40 years. A photographic survey made at the same time records a number of new discoveries, expos…

  • Euesperides (Benghazi)

    Open Access•Andrew Wilson, Paul Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This article reports on the sixth season of the ongoing project at Euesperides (Benghazi). Excavation in Area P established the date of construction of the penultimate phase (and therefore of the plain pebble mosaic with inscription published last year) as 300-282 BC, following the abandonment and demolition of the antepenultimate phase beneath it. An area used for the preparation and cutting of the materials employed in the final-phase mosaics h…

This article reports on the fifth season of the ongoing project at Euesperides (Benghazi). Excavation in Area P'confirmed a date of 261-250 BC for the destruction of the penultimate phase and the construction of the final phase, with mosaics of mixed pebble and irregular tesserae. An inscription was discovered on the mosaic of the penultimate phase; and some rooms of the preceding phase were investigated. In Area Q the dismantling of the street s…

The fourth season of the current project at Euesperides (Benghazi) took place in Spring 2002. Excavations continued in Areas P, Q and R, accompanied by limited augering work to determine the limits of surviving archaeology to the south of the Sidi Abeid mound. Excavations in Area P revealed part of a courtyard house from the penultimate phase of the site, with a probable andron and gunaikon . Its destruction is dated to after 261 BC. In Area Q wo…

  • Preliminary report on two seasons of excavations at Balagrae (al-Beida)

    Open Access•Ahmed Buzaian, Fuaad Bentaher•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper presents a short preliminary report of excavations at Balagrae (al-Beida) in 2001 and 2002. Two phases of building were investigated; the first, representing a possibly domestic or industrial structure which appears to have been destroyed in the earthquake of AD 365, and the second a crudely built late structure erected after the earthquake. Elements of a Roman Doric colonnade reused in the walls of Phase I suggests the existence nearb…

A programme of geological augering has begun to investigate the presumed location of the ancient harbour and the process by which the harbour and neighbouring lagoon silted up during antiquity. Continued excavation in Area P has revealed two phases of buildings, with a plain pebble floor of the fourth century BC and mixed pebble and irregular tesserae floor…

Geophysical survey and surface p…

  • Excavations at Euesperides (Benghazi)

    Open Access•J A Lloyd, Paul Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 8

A third season of excavation and finds analysis at Euesperides in March/April 1998 completed the fieldwork of the project begun in 1995. Further examination of the city defences suggests that their first phase should be dated not later than the early sixth century BC. The earliest masonry buildings within (and abutting) the city wall seem to belong to the 580s/570s BC. Other discoveries included a plain pebble pavement and a decorated ‘mixed styl…

The evidence indicates that the complex was probably used for producing wine rather than olive oil; it …

The geoarchaeology of the late-Holocene cave fill of a small cave, CP1565, located close to the Haua Fteah, is described. The well-stratified sequence, dating from the fourth century AD to the present day, provides a glimpse of life at the …

In this case the Department of Antiquities decided to protect the mosaic by careful reburial in a methodical fashion. Preservation…
