Magnetic Susceptibility Detection of Small Protohistoric Sites in the Raganello Basin, Calabria (Italy)
This paper presents pilot geophysical investigations carried out in 2005–2006 by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology in northern Calabria, Italy. The aim of this work was to find out if and how surface magnetic susceptibility (MS) measurements might be of use to correct significant visibility biases in the results of earlier large‐scale systematic and intensive field‐walking, in particular for unobtrusive rural protohistoric sites. It was foun…
Euesperides 2005
This paper is a preliminary report on the Spring 2005 season of the excavations at Euesperides (Benghazi). Work continued in Areas P and Q, and on the processing of finds from the 2005 and previous seasons. In Area P a series of domestic deposits dated to the last quarter of the fourth or first quarter of the third century BC was excavated, including a hearth, a probable domestic altar and associated votive deposits, and a series of post-holes pe…
Archaeological prospection of the Dutch perimarine landscape by means of magnetic methods
Fluxgate gradiometer surveys on two sites in the coastal plains of The Netherlands showed unexpected results. On the one hand, archaeological features, identified by coring or test trenching, were undetectable owing to a lack of sufficient magnetic contrast between the infill of the archaeological structures and the surrounding natural (salt marsh) sediments. This lack of contrast was shown to be caused by the iron mineralogy and not by iron defi…
The effects of recent storms on the exposed coastline of Tocra
This paper, prepared at the request of the Department of Antiquities of Benghazi, reports on severe erosion of the exposed seaward escarpment of the ancient site of Tocra after recent winter storms. A brief measured survey by the authors and comparison with a plan of the site made in 1966, demonstrated that up to 20 m of the coastline has been lost in 40 years. A photographic survey made at the same time records a number of new discoveries, expos…
Euesperides (Benghazi)
This article reports on the sixth season of the ongoing project at Euesperides (Benghazi). Excavation in Area P established the date of construction of the penultimate phase (and therefore of the plain pebble mosaic with inscription published last year) as 300-282 BC, following the abandonment and demolition of the antepenultimate phase beneath it. An area used for the preparation and cutting of the materials employed in the final-phase mosaics h…
Euesperides (Benghazi)
This article reports on the fifth season of the ongoing project at Euesperides (Benghazi). Excavation in Area P'confirmed a date of 261-250 BC for the destruction of the penultimate phase and the construction of the final phase, with mosaics of mixed pebble and irregular tesserae. An inscription was discovered on the mosaic of the penultimate phase; and some rooms of the preceding phase were investigated. In Area Q the dismantling of the street s…
Euesperides (Benghazi)
The fourth season of the current project at Euesperides (Benghazi) took place in Spring 2002. Excavations continued in Areas P, Q and R, accompanied by limited augering work to determine the limits of surviving archaeology to the south of the Sidi Abeid mound. Excavations in Area P revealed part of a courtyard house from the penultimate phase of the site, with a probable andron and gunaikon . Its destruction is dated to after 261 BC. In Area Q wo…
Euesperides (Benghazi)
This article reports on the third season of the current project at Euesperides (Benghazi). A programme of geological augering has begun to investigate the presumed location of the ancient harbour and the process by which the harbour and neighbouring lagoon silted up during antiquity. Continued excavation in Area P has revealed two phases of buildings, with a plain pebble floor of the fourth century BC and mixed pebble and irregular tesserae floor…
Urbanism and Economy at Euesperides (Benghazi)
This paper reports on the first season of a new project at Euesperides (Benghazi) aimed at studying the urban development and economy of the city. Two area excavations were started, the first on the site of early Hellenistic pebble and tessellated mosaics discovered in 1998, and the second in what appears to be an area of houses and workshops built against the city wall on the east side of the mound of Sidi Abeid. Geophysical survey and surface p…
