The relations between working from home and travel behaviour: A panel analysis
Policies to increase the amount of time people spend working from home were widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since research suggests that the resulting increase in working from home will outlast these policies themselves, policymakers want to understand the relations between working from home and travel behaviour. We apply longitudinal modelling techniques to estimate the relations between working from home and travel behaviour using pan…
Carsharing: The impact of system characteristics on its potential to replace private car trips and reduce car ownership
This paper aims to explore the potential of carsharing in replacing private car trips and reducing car ownership and how this is affected by its attributes. To that affect, a stated choice experiment is conducted and the data are analyzed by latent class models in order to incorporate preference heterogeneity. The results show that around 40% of car drivers indicated that they are willing to replace some of their private car trips by carsharing, …
Exploring public perceptions of tradable credits for congestion management in urban areas
Congestion is threatening the accessibility and liveability of urban regions. Cities are usually hesitant to consider the effective, yet controversial idea of congestion pricing as a measure to abate the growing economic and environmental problems. In the longstanding search for an effective and acceptable pricing scheme, there has been an increased interest in tradable credits. Compared to charging instruments, this novel concept has the theoret…

Effects of land-use transport scenarios on travel patterns: A multi-state supernetwork application
Understanding travellers’ response is essential to address policy questions arising from spatial and transport planning sectors. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of the multi-state supernetwork approach to investigate the effects of land-use transport scenarios on individuals’ travel patterns. In particular, it illustrates that multi-state supernetworks are capable of representing activity-travel patterns at a high level of detail, includin…
Effects of task complexity and time pressure on activity-travel choices: Heteroscedastic logit model and activity-travel simulator experiment
This paper derives, estimates and applies a discrete choice model of activity-travel behaviour that accommodates potential effects of task complexity and time pressure on decision-making. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that both factors (task complexity and time pressure) are jointly captured in a discrete choice model. More specifically, our heteroscedastic logit model captures potential impacts of task complexity and time …
The impact of including images in a conjoint measurement task: Evidence from two small-scale studies
In the Netherlands, a large ongoing study seeks to provide insight into the process behind preferences and choices with regard to moving and housing. As part of the development of the survey instrument that was used in this study, we examined whether visual images (such as photographs) should be included, since they may clarify particular attributes (e.g., architectural style) and make the choice task more realistic for the respondents. However, …
The Choice of Park and Ride Facilities: An Analysis Using a Context-Dependent Hierarchical Choice Experiment
Park and ride (P&R) facilities have been proposed in several countries to alleviate the accessibility problems in cities. Despite growing accessibility problems, these facilities do not seem to attract the expected number of car drivers and are underused. In an attempt to measure consumer evaluations of the attributes of P&R facilities, a stated choice experiment, based on the method of hierarchical information integration, was conducted in the c…
Testing Hierarchical Information Integration Theory: The Causal Structure of Household Residential Satisfaction
In this paper we propose use of structural equation modelling to validate the assumed classification of attributes necessary in hierarchical information integration approaches to preference formation. The suggested approach is illustrated in a study of residential satisfaction and preference in the Netherlands. The findings emphasise the potential of the approach
Analyzing heterogeneity in conjoint estimates of residential preferences
Group-Based versus Individual-Based Conjoint Preference Models of Residential Preferences: A Comparative Test
The conjoint preference approach, measuring individual preferences, has a long history in the study of residential decisionmaking processes. Residential choice behaviour, however, is often the result of a group decisionmaking process. In this paper we investigate whether conjoint preference models derived from group responses are different from and predict better than conventional conjoint models derived from the responses of individuals who do n…
