Psychologisation of cinema: The work of Val del Omar (1904–1982)
This article takes the career of Spanish filmmaker Val del Omar (1904–1982) as a basis for analysing some of the crossroads between the psychologisation of modern culture and the development of cinematic art. Like Sergei Eisenstein or Jean Epstein, Val del Omar was an avant-garde director who resorted to psychological discourse to substantiate his aesthetic theories and proposals. As his creative life spanned the better part of the 20th century, …
The objectivist critique of Hermann Helmholtz's theory of perception: The case of Ramón Turró (1854–1926)
In this article, we look into the development of the Helmholtz theory of perception in the light of Spanish biologist Ramón Turró's objectivist critique of the theory. In the first part, we explain the decisive role that Helmholtz's theory of perception played in the evolution of his own general philosophical stance. Through the work of Helmholtz, we show how the dialectic between philosophical surmises and models of perception was an ongoing, fu…

Hooked on the Blues: Technical and expressive continuities between life and music
This article proposes a very specific approach to music, defined as a cultural, material or symbolic tool that intermeshes with certain people’s life experience. From that standpoint, music may be seen as one of the essential keys for interpreting a biography. The theoretical argument, described from a cultural and mediational perspective, is exemplified in the relationship established between musician and instrument. The singular value of each i…
Psychological keys in the study of African American religious folk songs in the early work of Howard W. Odum (1884–1954).
This study focuses on the analysis of the early work of Howard W. Odum (1884-1954) and the examination of the psychological aspects that marked his reflection on African American music. This analysis reveals many of the aspects that were generically shared by the psychological agenda of the period when analyzing aesthetic experience and activity. Outstanding among these are the relationship of the musical phenomenon with very basic or primary aff…
Evolution, activity and assembled mediation: A neo-Balwinian response to the universalism of evolutionary psychology
In this article, we suggest an alternative to the psycho-evolutionist positions that attempt to establish cultural universals to surmount the paradoxes of social constructionism. We review the proposals put forward by Franks (2014) on the biological factors that determine the human species’ basic sociality and the political consequences that can be drawn from them. We subject this conception to a critical review on two fronts. On one front, we tu…

Citizen weeks or the psychologizing of citizenship
Arland Deyett Weeks (1871-1936) was an American educator and social reformer who published The Psychology of Citizenship in 1917 with the intention of compiling the psychological, psychobiological, and psychosocial knowledge needed for governing modern democratic Western industrialized societies, as well as offering suggestions for intervention and social reform in the educational, legal, and occupational domains. His point of view can be placed …
The noise of the time machine: The “history of sound” as a mediated experience
Taking Jürgen Müller’s (2012) article The sound of history and acoustic memory: Where psychology and history converge as a starting point, we make a critical reflection about the way in which sound has been represented in history and the many ways in which the intersection between sound and history has been understood. We centre our critique on two components of Müller’s work. The first of these is a bias according to which the past is seen as a …
