Has higher education become more interdisciplinary? a longitudinal analysis of syllabi using natural language processing
Despite the increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary research in universities, we know little about the extent to which university education is interdisciplinary. This study investigates whether higher education has embraced interdisciplinarity. By applying natural language processing techniques to a dataset of 478,233 syllabi from 2004 to 2019, our analysis examines three key dimensions: lexical, topical, and pedagogical. Contrary to the prevail…
The role of English Wikipedia in mediating East Asian historical disputes
With the expansion of the Internet in the early twenty-first century, public historical disputes between South Korea and China have become more pronounced. While existing research has focused on domestic Korean or Chinese digital spaces, the convergence or clash of these national narratives on global platforms remains underexplored. Our research bridges this gap by investigating the role of online platforms in shaping public historical debates. W…
Opening the Blackbox of Computational Social Science Research Process
A Soft Power Challenge, or an Opportunity? A Big Data Analysis on Chinese Soft Power during Covid-19 Pandemic
The Chinese government's rigorous efforts to enhance its soft power have confronted a major challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to look at how the Chinese soft power changed throughout the pandemic using English news articles that covered China. The research took a data science approach to investigate the contents of articles using machine-learning-based sentiment analysis and Dirichlet-Multinomial Regression (DMR) analysis. …
Structural Topic Model Analysis of Mask-Wearing Issue Using International News Big Data
Media plays an important role in the acquisition of health information worldwide. This was particularly evident in the face of the COVID-19 epidemic. Relatedly, it is practical and desirable for people to wear masks for health, fashion, and religious regions. However, depending on cultural differences, people naturally accept wearing a mask, or they look upon it negatively. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread mask-wearing mandates wo…
