The Causes of Tragedy in The Great Gatsby
This paper examines Gatsby’s tragedy in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby through Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of cultural capital, habitus, and distinction. While previous studies have often interpreted Gatsby’s failure as the result of moral corruption, personal idealism, or the collapse of the American Dream, this paper argues that Gatsby’s exclusion from the East Egg elite stems from the structural limits of social mobility itself. Althoug…

Association between perceived olfactory dysfunction and all-cause mortality in Chinese adults
Background: Olfactory dysfunction has been suggested to be associated with all-cause mortality. Yet, there is a lack of large-scale cohorts to study this relationship. Methods: Using data from the Kailuan cohort, we assessed 97 327 Chinese adults for perceived olfactory dysfunction at baseline and gathered mortality data from government records. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to analyse the risk of all-cause mortality associat…
Evaluation of Human Settlement Environment and Identification of Development Barriers Based on the Ecological Niche Theory
The quality of human settlement environment (HSE) is related to people's well-being. Since the implementation of the Western Development Strategy and the Grain to Green Program, the HSE in northern Shaanxi has undergone a major transformation. In order to explore the evolution pattern and seek a coordinated development strategy for all systems in the whole region, this paper, from the perspective of "production-living-ecological", evaluates the H…

Exploring the Driving Factors of Remote Sensing Ecological Index Changes from the Perspective of Geospatial Differentiation
Using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, Moderate-resolution image spectroradiometer (MODIS) data of the Weihe River Basin from 2001 to 2021 were acquired, four ecological indicators, namely, greenness, wetness, heat, and dryness, were extracted, and the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was constructed through principal component analysis. In addition, the geographic detectors and a multi-scale geographic weighted regression model (MGW…
Evaluation of Social Values for Ecosystem Services in Urban Riverfront Space Based on the SolVES Model
Urban riverfront space has diversified ecosystem services, but due to excessive changes in the geographical environment, such as drastic changes in land use, people gain social value at a great ecological cost. Obtaining benefits from the ecosystem in this way is not sustainable. Therefore, this paper uses the SolVES model to evaluate the social value of ecosystem services on the east bank of the Fenghe River, while also studying the contribution…
Coupling Coordination Relationship and Driving Mechanism between Urbanization and Ecosystem Service Value in Large Regions
Mastering the coupling and coordination relationship and driving mechanism of urbanization and ecosystem service value (ESV) is of great significance to ecological protection and regional sustainable development. In this paper, the coupling coordination model, geographic detector and GWR model are used to analyze the spatio-temporal coupling interaction between urbanization and ESV and the spatial differentiation characteristics of influencing fa…
Regional Spatial Management Based on Supply–Demand Risk of Ecosystem Services—A Case Study of the Fenghe River Watershed
The supply-demand risk assessment of ecosystem services (ES) can identify the supply-demand risk level, which is very important for the sustainable management of regional ES. In this study, taking the Fenghe River watershed (FRW) as a case, based on the status and the change trend of the supply-demand ratio of ES, and the ES supply change trend, the supply-demand risk level of food provision (FP), water yield (WY), soil retention (SR), and climat…
Critical Review on the Idea of Dystopia
The purpose of this review is firstly to show the formation of dystopia that finds its roots in utopia. Then, the foundation of dystopian fiction from the perspectives of such critics as Chad Walsh, Tom Moylan, Mark R. Hillegas, and Erika Gottlieb, among some others, is investigated. Finally, we briefly reveal the standing of Aldous Huxley, Kurt Vonnegut, and Don DeLillo, among many other dystopian writers, in depiction of dystopian societies. Th…
