Faith-based organizations as political actors in local refugee politics
This study analyses the role of selected Catholic, Protestant, and Islamic faith-based organizations (FBOs) as political actors in the context of local refugee politics in Germany. We conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with leaders from local FBOs and examined the data via structured content analysis. The empirical material provided information on three aspects: the self-perceived role as political actors, contacts with political decision-ma…
The Impact of Religious Beliefs on Social Trust
It is a remaining assumption in social capital research that religious communities are beneficial to the formation of social trust because they provide and maintain particular religious beliefs that foster prosocial behaviour and universal ethics. However, this so-called belief hypothesis has been insufficiently tested so far since many studies in this field of research are drawing on large-scale datasets that allow only a limited operationalisat…
Philo-Semitic Civilisationism or Anti-Semitic Nationalism? The Ambivalent Stance of the Alternative for Germany Towards Judaism, Jews, and Israel
This article follows up on assumptions of Rogers Brubaker and Benjamin Moffitt, according to whom, some Western and Northern European right-wing populist parties use ‘civilisationist’ and liberal-illiberal narratives that are, for instance, characterised by a ‘philo-Semitic stance’. The paper analyses to what extent the German right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) fits into this concept, considering the party’s ambivalent attitu…

Similar yet not the Same
Applying a qualitative framing analysis, this paper examines narratives of the right-wing populist parties Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands on religion. The paper argues that references of these populist parties to religion can be interpreted against the background of specific national context factors such as the respective history of nation building, the traditional role of religion in society and …
Covid-19 Impacts on Christian and Muslim Organizations in Germany
The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly influenced all areas of life and day-to-day operations. This paper studies the impact of the pandemic on Muslim and Christian organizations in Germany. The focus is activity implementation, time investment, staff changes, and working processes of full-time staff and volunteers. On the basis of a quantitative survey ( n = 454) and qualitative in-depth interviews with organizational representatives from 2021 to 2022…
When are churches allowed to discriminate? How churches’ role in public service delivery affects employment equality regulations
Secular–Religious Competition and the Exclusion of Islam from the Public Sphere
This paper deals in a qualitative discourse analysis with the role of Islamic organizations in welfare delivery in Germany and the Netherlands. Referring to Jonathan Fox's “secular–religious competition perspective”, the paper argues that similar trends of exclusion of Islamic organizations from public social service delivery can be explained with discourses on Islam in these two countries. The analysis, first, shows that in the national competit…
Filling a Representation Gap? How Populist and Mainstream Parties Address Muslim Immigration and the Role of Islam
This paper asks whether Germany’s main right-wing Populist Party, the AfD, filled a representation gap on the issue of Muslim immigration and integration and the role of Islam. We shed light on this question by analysing more than 575 manifestos from all 116 elections on the state and federal level between 1990 and 2017. A quantitative text analysis reveals that all parties increased their attention towards the topic in the recent years, while th…
Debating the ‘integration of Islam’
This paper examines what influences the views of governmental and Islamic actors in consultations on the integration of Islam in Germany and the Netherlands. Disentangling institutionalist and constructivist assumptions within the concept of political opportunity structures and employing a content analysis of primary documents and interviews, the paper shows that expectations of both approaches apply: On the one hand, Islamic organizations (as ch…

Organisations islamiques en Europe et aux États-Unis
This article utilizes an analytical framework that examines the differences in the organizational forms and strategies of Islamic organizations with reference to both internal and external factors affecting the organization, such as internal organizational characteristics and national and transnational political opportunity structures. This perspective is applied to review the empirical results of recent secondary studies from a cross-national an…

Islamic Umbrella Organizations and Contemporary Political Discourse on Islam in Germany
The political discourse on Islam in Germany has intensified in the twenty-first century, with the result that Islamic umbrella organizations have increasingly been involved in political processes. This paper describes how these organizations have responded to this change in the discourse and to their new role as points of contact for political actors. Their self-concepts and interaction strategies are analyzed from an innovative theoretical persp…
Religious Governance and Integration Policies in Germany and the Netherlands
This article focuses on the question of how national integration policies and regimes of religious governance in Germany and the Netherlands shape political opportunity structures for organized Muslim migrants. The impact of these opportunity structures is analyzed by looking at the self-portrayal of (primarily Turkish) Muslim organizations in the two countries and the strategies they apply. It is shown that Muslim organizations in the Netherland…
