Advanced forecasts of global extreme marine heatwaves through a physics-guided data-driven approach
The unusually warm sea surface temperature events known as marine heatwaves (MHWs) have a profound impact on marine ecosystems. Accurate prediction of extreme MHWs has significant scientific and financial worth. However, existing methods still have certain limitations, especially in the most extreme MHWs. In this study, to address these issues, based on the physical nature of MHWs, we created a novel deep learning neural network that is capable o…
Association between physical activity patterns and the risk of stroke phenotypes
Meeting the recommended 150 min of weekly MVPA is associated with a reduced overall risk of stroke. Both active exercise patterns provide protection against ischemic stroke; however, a conventional distribution of physical activity may be linked to a higher risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage. These findings suggest that, in addition to total MVPA volume, the temporal pattern of activity accumulation plays a critical role in modulating stroke risk

The warm Blob in the northeast Pacific—the bridge leading to the 2015/16 El Niño
We address the occurrence of the warm anomaly, known as the Blob, that developed from late 2013 to 2015 in the northeast Pacific and its connection with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. The warm Blob results from the enhanced second ocean–atmosphere (O–A) coupled mode of variability in the tropical and North Pacific, representing a small part of the Victoria mode (VM) in the northeast Pacific forced by the strengthened North P…
Finer resolution observation and monitoring of global land cover
We have produced the first 30 m resolution global land-cover maps using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data. We have classified over 6600 scenes of Landsat TM data after 2006, and over 2300 scenes of Landsat TM and ETM+ data before 2006, all selected from the green season. These images cover most of the world's land surface except Antarctica and Greenland. Most of these images came from the United States Geo…
