  • Balancing livestock production and environmental outcomes in northern Australia’s tropical savanna under global change

Open Access•Rebecca K Runting, Darran King et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Livestock production is an integral part of the global food system and the livelihoods of local people, but it also raises questions of environmental sustainability due to issues such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, biodiversity decline, land degradation, and water use. Further challenges to extensive livestock systems may arise from changes in climate and the global economy (particularly variation in prices for livestock and carbon). However,…

  • Emissions offset incentives, carbon storage and profit optimization for Australian timber plantations

Open Access•Li Luo, Yuan Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2023•References: 8

This article evaluates additional carbon storage that becomes profitable over a range of carbon credit prices through Australian Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) methods introduced in 2017 for timber plantations. We found prices of $20 and $50 CO2-eq t−1 motivated switching 4% and 29% of southern Australian case study estate stands from short-rotation E. globulus to long-rotation P. radiata, resulting in 10% and 48% more estate carbon storage. We f…

  • Land-use and sustainability under intersecting global change and domestic policy scenarios

    Open Access•Brett A Bryan, Martin Nolan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 6

Understanding potential future influence of environmental, economic, and social drivers on land-use and sustainability is critical for guiding strategic decisions that can help nations adapt to change, anticipate opportunities, and cope with surprises. Using the Land-Use Trade-Offs (LUTO) model, we undertook a comprehensive, detailed, integrated, and quantitative scenario analysis of land-use and sustainability for Australia’s agricultural land f…

  • Designing Tradable Credit Policy for Diffuse Source Salinity Ex Ante

John Ward, Jeffery D Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2008

Market-based instruments are policies that rely on price signals as incentives to encourage private actions with public environmental benefits. They are becoming increasingly popular worldwide as instruments of natural resource management. Experience suggests that success of such policies can critically depend on design detail and that these design challenges are especially significant for diffuse source environmental issues. This article describ…
