Are Rape Myths Inherently Gendered? Examining Assumed Gender Ascribed to Gender-Neutral Versions of the Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale Among College Students
Rape myths are false beliefs about sexual violence that shift blame to the victim rather than the perpetrator. The Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance (IRMA) scale measures these myths, but critiques have led to the creation of gender-neutral versions. This study aimed to investigate how participants perceive gender in these versions. Surveys were given to U.S. college students, with variations in victim and perpetrator gender. Results showed no signif…
Centenary Paper
This article presents the results of the first scientific analysis of the inks of a thirteenth-century Castilian manuscript – British Library Add MS 20787, a copy of the Fuero de las leyes . The analysis reveals the fingerprint of the inks used in the codex and points the way to future cross-disciplinary research based on a wider corpus of evidence
Black inks under examination. Part 2
With this paper, we would like to contribute to the study of black writing materials by investigating the black inks used in the manuscripts from monastic production in the eastern part of the Frankish kingdom, especially in the region of Lake Constance and in Bavaria, and dated to the period between the 8th and the 10th centuries. The corpus under study contains manuscripts with formulae, i.e. model letters and charters, besides numerous other t…
Black Carolingian inks under examination. Part 1
Black writing materials of different types and compositions have varied in use over time and different geographical regions. With this paper, we would like to contribute to their study by listing and reviewing recipes for black writing inks that were in circulation in the Carolingian Empire as well as by referencing the archaeometric analyses of the black inks used in the manuscripts. The studies presented here that involved the humanities and na…
Local Data Journalism in Germany
This study explores data journalism within local and regional news organisations in Germany. Findings were drawn from nine semi-structured in-depth interviews with journalists working with local and regional dailies. Weischenberg’s model of contextual layers of journalism provides theoretical underpinnings to capture normative, structural, and functional insights as well as data journalists’ role conceptions. Results show that viable data is scar…
Florentine papyri under examination
Carbon inks with metallic admixtures are found on some papyri of the 2nd century CE from a family archive in Hermopolis. The great diversity of inks found in a single household within a short period of time suggests that inks were purchased rather than self-made
Rural Access Denied or Difficult
In this study Oliver Hahn and Anna Munkler analyse obstacles that foreign news journalists from Germany face in reporting about the so-called »Rohingya« conflict in Myanmar's Northern Rakhine State. This long-lasting dispute between a Muslim population group fighting for recognition as ethnic minority and the central government lead to an outbreak of violence followed by a mass exodus in 2017, in which the role of (parts of) the military remains …
Disclosing glittering and sparkling effects in 20th-century reverse glass paintings
Material analysis of Aztec codices in Berlin
The collection Manuscripta Americana in Berlin consists of fragmented codices acquired by Alexander von Humboldt in Mexico. Some of these Humboldt Codices are published as hieroglyphic writings of the Aztecs in “Vues des Cordilleres et Monuments des Peuples indigènes de l’Amerique”. Starting from a special compilation of seven fragments on plate 36 in the “Atlas”, we investigated the corresponding original fragments using material analysis in ord…

Illuminated Manuscripts from Turfan Tracing Silk Road Glamour by Analyzing Pigments
Investigation of manuscripts found in sites along the Silk Road shows the history of communication and exchange between Asia and the Mediterranean over the centuries. Different scripts and languages preserved on paper in certain styles provide information about traditions and provenance. To get an idea of the cultural background of the highly developed painting techniques obvious in some illuminated manuscripts, the material used for writing and …
Transatlantic Foreign Reporting and Foreign Correspondents After 9/11
Since the attacks of 9/11, U.S. media coverage of foreign news has changed significantly. As part of a wider study, this research identifies trends in reporting Europe in the United States after 9/11. Following a summary of the current state of research, the study’s methodological design is discussed. It is based on a sample of 27 qualitative semistructured in-depth interviews with foreign correspondents working for different U.S. media outlets i…
Pigments, dyes, and black enamel-the colorants of reverse paintings on glass
Nondestructive analyses of medieval reverse paintings on glass revealed the same dyes and pigments customarily used in panel paintings. However, there is one exception: the black colorant is not a carbon-based pigment, but black enamel. In this respect, the stylistic as well as the technical influence of stained glass artwork can clearly be seen on reverse paintings on glass. However, there is a crucial difference: in reverse paintings, the black…
Coloured Prints of the 16th Century
Qualitative investigations of pigments and dyes using micro X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (micro‐XRF) and visible spectrophotometry (VIS) are suitable non‐destructive methods for the characterization of different colorants in art objects. In this study, several rare coloured engravings from the work of Albrecht Dürer—and, in addition, from the work of Cornelis Cort, Servatius Raeven and Johannes Sadeler—were investigated. The analyses result in…
