  • Blockchain and Food Trust

    Open Access•Federico Modica, Filippo Sgroi et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2026•References: 1

Blockchain is increasingly used in agri‐food supply chains to make products more transparent and trustworthy. Yet, in countries like Italy, where certifications such as PDO, PGI, and organic labels already shape consumer confidence, its added value is still unclear. This study examines how Italian consumers understand and evaluate blockchain‐based traceability, exploring their awareness, trust, and willingness to pay for verified food products. A…

  • Olive Oil Tourism as a Tool for Sustainable Development

Open Access•Caterina Sciortino, Filippo Sgroi et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2026

This study examines olive oil tourism as an experiential form of cultural tourism that enhances extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), olive‐growing heritage, and rural territories. Adopting a demand‐side perspective, it investigates consumers' awareness, motivations, and behavioral intentions related to oleotourism activities. An online survey of 511 respondents was conducted in Italy, collecting information on knowledge of oleotourism, interest in mill…

  • Measuring proximity tourism in Spain after the pandemic. An Origin-Destination Matrix approach

Open Access•Caterina Sciortino, Ludovica Venturella et al.•ARTICLE•Turistica - Italian Journal of…•2024

This work aims to provide more clarity around the concept of proximity tourism giving an overview of how tourist flows changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of proximity changed over the years in different ways. Indeed, if in the past it was understood only on a geographical or physical level, today it makes sense to talk about the different typologies of proximity such as cultural, political, and social. The economic crisis caused by…

  • Covid‐19 and tourism

Open Access•Martina Aronica, Pietro Pizzuto et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

The impact of the COVID‐19 crisis on tourism flows is without precedent in terms of speed and severity. In this paper, we try to infer a possible future scenario for the tourism sector, evaluating the medium‐term effects of past pandemics on tourist arrivals. We find that pandemics lead to a persistent decline in tourist arrivals, with the effects being larger in developing and emerging countries. Interestingly, the effects are heterogeneous acro…

  • Tracking cruise passengers' consumption

Open Access•Caterina Sciortino, Mauro Ferrante et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This paper analyzes the relationships between the spatial behaviour and destination expenditures of cruise tourists by integrating customer surveys and GPS tracking technology. Based on data collated in 2018 and 2019 in Copenhagen, cruise passenger expenditure was modelled via logistic regression, using socio-demographic characteristics and mobility-related variables. In order to map the spatial behaviour and the key characteristics of the itiner…

  • Exploring the tourism markets’ convergence hypothesis in Italy

    Open Access•Pietro Pizzuto, Caterina Sciortino•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2021

This article aims at investigating the tourism markets’ convergence hypothesis across Italy’s 20 major source markets. To reach our goal, we use monthly data of tourist arrivals and overnights over the period 2008–2018 and the time-varying factor model developed by Phillips and Sul (2007, 2009). Our findings suggest the absence of full (absolute) convergence, leading us to accept the hypothesis of club convergence. We show that the traditionally …
