  • Digitally Mediated Aesthetics

    Open Access•Huiyan He•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2026

This paper examines how the visual signatures and sensory experiences of rural spaces are increasingly mediated by digital technologies. Drawing on a case study of the aesthetics of Wanghong rural spaces in Guangzhou, China, I demonstrate how the landscape design of these spaces incorporates visually striking elements, is deliberately constructed to prompt photo-taking, and includes features aimed at maximizing location exposure through circulati…

  • Digital rurality

    Open Access•Huiyan He, Agnieszka Leszczynski•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Rural spaces are increasingly shaped by the pervasive influence of digital technologies, which are integral to their constitution, experience, and practices. This article distills how the forces of digitality inflect contemporary conceptualizations of rurality by iterating Halfacree's (2006, 2007) model of rural space to account for the emergence of what we term digital rurality . We advance a threefold heuristic of digital rurality as comprised …

  • Planetary rural thinking in digital geographies

    Open Access•Huiyan He•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Human Geography•2023•References: 13

In this commentary, I argue that planetary rural geographies and digital geographies have much to offer and learn from each other and identify their mutual reciprocities. By highlighting specific instances of digital mediation in rural areas, I demonstrate how digital technologies and practices are driving rural transformations at a planetary scale. Simultaneously, I identify how planetary rural thinking can offer valuable perspectives for digita…

  • Geographical Patterns of Algal Communities Associated with Different Urban Lakes in China

Open Access•Shengnan Chen, Huiyan He et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Urban lakes play an important role in drainage and water storage, regulating urban microclimate conditions, supplying groundwater, and meeting citizens' recreational needs. However, geographical patterns of algal communities associated with urban lakes from a large scale are still unclear. In the present work, the geographical variation of algal communities and water quality parameters in different urban lakes in China were determined. The water …

  • How reliable are cultivated land assets as social security for Chinese farmers

    Open Access•Yahui Wang, Xiubin Li et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2020•Cited by: 18•References: 23

  • Exploring a Moderate Fallow Scale of Cultivated Land in China from the Perspective of Food Security

Open Access•Dan Lu, Yahui Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Food security remains a primary concern because of the large population and scarce land resources in China, and it is a core task to determine the appropriate proportion and scale of fallowing for fallow systems. The aim of this study was to systematically estimate the grain production potential (GPP) of existing and unexcavated cultivated land due to land use change from 1990 to 2017 and calculate the theoretical fallowing scale by using a popul…
