  • Patina Formation and Corrosion Processes in Sefidruy Beta Bronze Artifacts From the Rasht Archaeology Museum, Iran

Open Access•Hamidreza Bakhshandehfard, Soraya Mohammadi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•References: 26

High‐tin bronze artifacts, known as Sefidruy vessels and preserved in the Rasht Archaeology Museum, Iran, were examined to investigate patina formation and corrosion processes. Dating mainly to the Sasanian period (224–651 ce ) and originating from Gilan province, these objects reflect a distinct copper–tin alloying tradition. Elemental analyses confirmed 20wt%–22 wt% tin with minor lead, whereas metallography revealed α and β (martensitic) phase…

  • An Archaeometallurgical Investigation on Some Archaeological Metal Finds From the Sasanian Site of Jahāngir, Western Iran

Open Access•Omid Oudbashi, Leila Khosravi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 43

Twelve metal artifacts from recent excavations at the Sasanian archaeological site of Jahāngir in western Iran have been analyzed. These items include both decorative and utilitarian artifacts. The samples were examined using micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (μ‐XRF), scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), and metallography techniques. The analysis revealed that 11 of the artifacts were made from various copper a…

A group of metal objects excavated at Qasr-e Abu Nasr in south-central Iran in the 1930s, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, has been analyzed to examine metalworking techniques and metallurgical processes. Thirty-three objects were studied and analyzed by micro-X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and metallography techniques. The results of these analyses show a wide range …

  • Provenance of the Bronze Age lapis lazuli pieces from the Early Urban Center of Konar Sandal, Jiroft, Southern Iran

Open Access•Omid Oudbashi, Atefeh Shekofteh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The sources of lapis lazuli objects found in the Bronze Age of the Iranian Plateau and its trade routes have been a subject of interest and a research question. Four archaeological pieces of lapis lazuli recovered from a stone-working workshop in the Bronze Age site of Konar Sandal South (Jiroft Plain), southern Iran, were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) techni…

The manifestations of ancient metals’ embrittlement, cracking and fracture, are challenging problems for restorers and conservators, yet the scientific understanding of these problems is limited. In particular, the study and interpretation of fracture surfaces, fractography, is a minor or non-existent consideration for most archaeometallurgical investigations. This paper presents a survey of fractographic analyses, in combination with the more wi…
