Rewetting on agricultural peatlands can offer cost effective greenhouse gas reduction at the national level
To reach EU’s carbon neutrality target by 2050, emission reductions in the land-use sector are needed. Agricultural peatlands attribute for half of the greenhouse gas emissions of cropland in both in EU and Finland. High greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural peatlands are primarily caused by CO 2 emissions following aerobic peat decomposition due to deep drainage, and studies have shown that raising water-table has potential to slow down the…
Exploring the potential of circular economy to mitigate pressures on biodiversity
The effects of circular economy on biodiversity are poorly understood. This study provides observations on approaches for assessing circular economy and illustrates, with a Finnish case study, the potential of circular economy to mitigate pressures on biodiversity. The case study focuses on the construction and real estate sectors, as well as the forest industry. The findings imply that circular economy actions that reduce the extraction of virgi…
Impact of structural changes in wood‐using industries on net carbon emissions in Finland
Forests and forest industries can contribute to climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere, by storing it in biomass, and by fabricating products that substitute more greenhouse gas emission intensive materials and energy. The objectives of the study are to specify alternative scenarios for the diversification of wood product markets and to determine how an increasingly diversified market structure could impact the net c…
Developing Key Indicators of Green Growth
Greening the economy has been widely discussed as a new strategy for simultaneously reducing environmental pressures, promoting economic growth and enhancing social well‐being. Indicators are one tool that can be used to describe the development of green growth. This paper presents and evaluates the process of attempting to build a set of policy‐relevant key indicators of green growth for Finland. The challenges of developing a cross‐scale indica…

Expert Panel Weighting and Aggregation of the Sustainable Society Index (SSI) 2010 – a Decision Analysis Approach
A sustainable society index (SSI) has been designed to measure the sustainability of different countries in terms of economic, environmental and human well‐being dimensions. These areas were subdivided into eight categories and 24 indicators. The paper shows that the SSI could be considered as a decision‐making problem with multiple objectives. We propose a decision‐analysis approach for estimation of the weights of indicators, categories and dim…
Towards more non-compensatory sustainable society index
Sensitivity analysis of environmentally extended input–output models as a tool for building scenarios of sustainable development
EE-IO modeling of the environmental impacts of Finnish imports using different data sources
Recent Changes in Trophic State of the Baltic Sea along SW Coast of Finland
Drawing reliable conclusions on changes in the trophic state of various subareas of the Baltic Sea is problematic, in large part because the monitoring of productivity parameters exhibiting high natural variability is based on sparse sampling. This emphasizes the importance of long-term data sets. Here we present a 30-year chlorophyll α data set from the western Gulf of Finland. The trophic state of the study area showed an increasing trend in th…

Decision Analysis Frameworks for Life‐Cycle Impact Assessment
Life‐cycle impact assessments (LCIAs) are complex because they almost always involve uncertain consequences relative to multiple criteria. Several authors have noticed that this is precisely the sort of problem addressed by methods of decision analysis. Despite several experiences of using multipleattribute decision analysis (MADA) methods in LCIA, the possibilities of MADA methods in LCIA are rather poorly elaborated in the field of life‐cycle a…
