  • Introduction: What Happened after the Fall of Teotihuacan

    Open Access•Linda R Manzanilla•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2026

The fall of Teotihuacan, associated with the internal revolt and the AD 550–570 “Great Fire,” shook Mesoamerica. Demographic displacements and military competition between sites were all characteristics of the subsequent Epiclassic period. This section will review data from my project “The Study of Tunnels and Caves in Teotihuacan (1987–1996),” behind the Pyramid of the Sun. Two of the four tunnels were extensively excavated and, for the first ti…

  • A High-Resolution Chronology for the Palatial Complex of Xalla in Teotihuacan, Mexico, Combining Radiocarbon Ages and Archaeomagnetic Dates in a Bayesian Model

Teotihuacan is one of the most studied archaeological sites in Mesoamerica because of its exceptional size and urban planning; however, its last years of occupation and abandonment are still under debate. We report a high-resolution chronology for the Xalla complex integrating archaeomagnetic dates, radiocarbon ( 14 C) ages, and detailed archaeological information about sample type and context in a Bayesian model. The model includes 42 14 C ages …

  • Teotihuacan, an exceptional corporate society of Mesoamerica

    Linda R Manzanilla•ARTICLE•L’annuaire du Collège de France•2020

This talk will review what I believe are the exceptional characteristics of the city of Teotihuacan in Mesoamerica of the Classic period: a huge planned settlement with an urban grid, a multiethnic society, a corporate organization. Teotihuacan, in Central Mexico, stands out as one of the largest pre-industrial urban sites, with characteristics that set this site apart as an exception in Mesoamerica. One of these characteristics is life in multif…

A multi-analytical approach was used to characterize color remains from Xalla, a Teotihuacan palace complex (project Teotihuacan, Elite and Government. Excavations in Xalla led by Linda R. Manzanilla). Color samples were obtained from polished lithic instruments and pigment ores. Those samples were analyzed combining microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Our results coincide with previous studies in Teotihuacan, with the chromatic palette dis…

This chapter reviews the mortuary program at Teotihuacan, one of the largest prehispanic cities in Mesoamerica during the Classic Period (ca. A.D. 150–750). Three different types of practices are identified: (1) domestic funerary rites and ancestors' care; (2) special individuals and relic care; and (3) human sacrifices. In terms of the first practice—which is the most common at Teotihuacan—the location, type of container, position, funerary good…
