Understanding the discontinuation of biogas practice in Bangladesh
Women’s empowerment domains
The study investigates the composition, changes, and determinants of five domains of the Women’s Empowerment Index in Agriculture (WEAI) so that domain-specific policy recommendations can be forwarded. The analysis is based on three rounds of nationally representative Bangladesh Integrated Household Surveys (BIHS) covering 2011/12–2018/19 comprising 10,107 observations and applying Tobit models. Results reveal that indices of all domains of WEAI …
The Determinants and Synergies of Livelihood Choices Across Climate-vulnerable Regions
This study explores the role of diverse climatic vulnerabilities and socio- economic variables in explaining Bangladeshi rural households’ livelihood choices and the synergies that exist across the choices. We develop a multivariate probit model for analysing a dataset of 5,604 households that is representative of rural Bangladesh. The findings reveal a landscape where agriculture-based strategies predominate, with households strategically combin…
Policies to combat nitrogen pollution in South Asia
Assessing and managing nitrogen sustainably is imperative for achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targeted for 2030. South Asian countries, aware of the environmental and health impacts of nitrogen pollution, regionally as well as globally, piloted the 2019 UN resolution on sustainable nitrogen management, calling for urgent policy action. This paper assists South Asia policy development by providing new insights into nitroge…
Farmers’ adaptation strategies to combat climate change in drought prone areas in Bangladesh
Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture
This paper examines level, inequality, and change in women’s empowerment in agriculture and its impact on crop productivity and efficiency using a nationally representative Bangladesh Integrated Household Survey (BIHS) of 5,780 and 6,195 households from the same villages in Bangladesh in 2012 and 2015 conducted by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). Results reveal that although women’s empowerment score increased significantly f…
Productivity and efficiency impact of climate change and agroecology on Bangladesh agriculture
Assessing and explaining vegetable growers’ efficiency in the south-eastern hilly districts of Bangladesh
Through analysing survey data collected from 300 vegetable growers located in the south-eastern hilly districts of Bangladesh, this article identifies drivers of production and technical efficiency in okra and eggplant production. The estimated efficiency scores reveal that around 67% and 99% of the production in okra and eggplant, respectively, are lost due to inefficiency factors. Among different production inputs, land has the highest producti…
