  • Social preferences for vertebrates, invertebrates and plants

Íñigo Bidegain, Claudia Cerda Zúñiga et al.•ARTICLE•Human Dimensions of Wildlife•2023

We assessed social preferences toward vertebrates, invertebrates, and plants in a biodiversity hotspot in Chile. We asked respondents (n = 662) to rank species based on their preferences and to select one subset to protect and another subset to remove. We identified four species clusters based on preferences: charismatic animals, plants, less popular animals, and animals that cause phobia/rejection. Preferences to protect were higher in the chari…

  • Mexican American Parrhesia at Troy

    César López, César A López•ARTICLE•California History•2021

In the late 1960s, Mexican American and Chicana/o students and faculty began to create new cultural and academic spaces at the University of Southern California (USC). As outspoken advocates, they promoted a collective social identity as they questioned USC’s commitment to fulfilling the moral and humanistic responsibilities of its educational mission. These students and faculty members took part in the formation of ethnic studies and Chicana/o s…

  • Uncovering Ecosystem Service Bundles through Social Preferences

    Open Access•Berta Martín-López, Irene Iniesta-Arandia et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2012

Ecosystem service assessments have increasingly been used to support environmental management policies, mainly based on biophysical and economic indicators. However, few studies have coped with the social-cultural dimension of ecosystem services, despite being considered a research priority. We examined how ecosystem service bundles and trade-offs emerge from diverging social preferences toward ecosystem services delivered by various types of eco…

  • Evaluating Ecosystem Services in Transhumance Cultural LandscapesAn Interdisciplinary and Participatory Framework

Elisa Oteros-Rozas, José Antonio González et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2012

Following the concept of ecosystem services, we propose in this article an interdisciplinary and participatory methodological framework for ecosystem services assessment and participatory decision-making in Mediterranean cultural landscapes linked with transhumant pastoralism. It is based on four sequential phases: 1. characterisation of the social-ecological network associated with transhumance, 2. preliminary identification and characteri satio…
