  • Flexible Late Mousterian lithic technological organisation at Riparo l’Oscurusciuto (Italy)

Open Access•Francesco Valletta, Maya Oron et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

The portion of the Riparo l’Oscurusciuto (Italy) stratigraphic sequence so far excavated provides an outstanding record of the local population history between ca. 55 − 42 kya BP: a key period for understanding the end of the Middle Palaeolithic and the onset of the Upper Palaeolithic on a regional level. Previous studies focusing on the settlement pattern, the spatial organisation, and the lithic technology within the lower part of the exposed l…

  • Chert procurement for inferring Neanderthal mobility in central western Iberia

Open Access•Telmo Pereira, Ana Abrunhosa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

Lithic raw material sourcing is one of the most effective approaches for inferring exploitation territories during the Palaeolithic, including for Neanderthals. Certain raw materials, particularly chert, are especially well suited to this type of investigation because the distinctive characteristics of each geological source can be reliably identified through a combination of macroscopic observation, low-magnification analysis, and geochemical me…

  • The last Acheulean at El Sotillo complex site (Ciudad Real, Spain). Features, parallels and age

    Open Access•Manuel Santonja, Alfredo Pérez-González et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026

The site of El Sotillo has several distinct stratigraphic levels containing Acheulean and Mousterian lithic tools, dated to the final third of the Middle Pleistocene and the later phases of the Upper Pleistocene. It is uncommon to find open-air sites, that preserve such intensive and recurrent human occupations in stratigraphic position over an extended time range, which underscores the complex nature of the site. Excavations carried out between …

  • Early Middle Palaeolithic Occupations Dated to MIS 7 at the Abri du Maras (Ardèche, Southeast France)

    Open Access•M H Moncel, Marie-Hélène Moncel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

New excavations at the Abri du Maras have yielded remains of hitherto unknown deposits (layer 6) from the base of the sequence, with a small lithic and faunal series dated to MIS 7. In this paper, we investigate this occupation, undoubtedly in a cave context, before the cave gradually gave way to a shelter where the last occupations took place. The faunal assemblage accumulated through anthropic activities, and cervids are the dominant species. T…

  • Site Settlement Patterns During MIS 3 in the Southeast of France

    Open Access•M H Moncel, Pierre Guillemot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 60

  • A symbolic Neanderthal accumulation of large herbivore crania

    Open Access•Enrique Baquedano, J L Arsuaga et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 14•References: 71

This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at the Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via the analysis of the latter's archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence of Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 of the cave infill was found to contain an assemblage of mammalian bone remains dominated by the crania of large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity of post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxill…

  • Petrographic and SEM‐EDX characterization of Mousterian white/beige chert tools from the Navalmaíllo rock shelter (Madrid, Spain)

    Open Access•Ana Abrunhosa, M A BUSTILLO et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 14

Studying lithic raw material sourcing, processing and distribution is helpful when trying to reconstruct the territory, ecology, and cultural practices of Neanderthal groups. The use of multiple methods in such analyses allows for more refined characterizations to be made, helping to distinguish between materials better than any single method. Although 85% of the raw materials making up the Mousterian assemblage at the Navalmaíllo Rock Shelter (P…

  • Understanding Neanderthal technological adaptation at Navalmaíllo Rock Shelter (Spain) by measuring lithic raw materials performance variability

    Open Access•Ana Abrunhosa, Telmo Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2019•Cited by: 21•References: 56

  • Raw material study of the Mousterian lithic assemblage of Navalmaíllo Rockshelter (Pinilla del Valle, Spain)

Open Access•Ana Abrunhosa, Belén Márquez et al.•ARTICLE•Estudos do Quaternário /…•2014

This article presents the PhD project under the supervision of Nuno Bicho and Enrique Baquedano, which aims to study the origin of raw materials from the Mousterian lithic sets of the Calvero de la Higuera sites. At this first stage of the project the main objective is the determination and characterization of the raw materials present at the sites
