Renewed Archaeological Research in Singida Region, Central Tanzania
Archaeological research in central Tanzania, chiefly in the Singida Region, has only been sporadically conducted, with the focus of such investigations being mostly on rock art and Later Stone Age (LSA) material. Here, we report preliminary results from renewed research expeditions conducted in the Singida Region. In 2021 and 2022, we located 31 archaeological sites in Ikungi District, excavated an open-air site (Nkungi) and a rock shelter (Itram…
Sidi Zin Archaeological Project
The Sidi Zin Archaeological Project aims to bridge understanding of the Acheulean-Middle Stone Age transition in northern Tunisia, a relatively understudied region in the context of hominin evolution. The Sidi Zin locality will provide chronological, palaeoenvironmental, geomorphological and cultural insights into Acheulean and Middle Stone Age occupations in Tunisia
Plant wax biomarkers in human evolutionary studies
Plant wax biomarkers are an innovative proxy for reconstructing vegetation composition and structure, rainfall intensity, temperature, and other climatic and environmental dynamics. Traditionally used in earth sciences and climate studies from “off‐site” ocean and lake records, biomarker research is now incorporated in archeology and paleoanthropology to answer questions relating to past human‐environment interactions and human evolution. Biomark…
Initial assessment of bioavailable strontium at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania
Petrographic Characterization of Raw Material Sources at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania
Oldupai Gorge is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Tanzania along the western margin of the East African Rift System. Oldupai’s sedimentary record exhibits a complex sequence of inter-stratified lithic assemblages associated with the Early, Middle, and Later Stone Age. While diachronic technological change is perceptible, the totality of locally available rocks remained largely unchanged thr…
The Environmental Context of the Earliest Acheulean at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania
Water, vegetation, and human habitats are tightly coupled, and Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania is an exceptional locality for examining evolutionary events that associate with water availability and environmental stability or change. This project investigates interactions between and among paleo-hydrology, habitat type, and the human response to changing environmental settings. The objective is to interpret the climate and environmental context of the ol…
Fingerprinting of Quartzitic Outcrops at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania
The African Early Stone Age record, including that of Oldupai Gorge, reveals widespread evidence for hominin exploitation of quartzose lithic raw materials such as quartzite. However, few studies have sought to characterize these rock types grounded on the assumption that they are not amenable for provenance studies. Through the use of macroscopic, petrographic, and EDXRF analysis, we characterize source material from five quartzitic outcrops bel…
Structural characterization and decontamination of dental calculus for ancient starch research
Soil and Plant Phytoliths from the Acacia-Commiphora Mosaics at Oldupai Gorge (Tanzania)
This paper studies soil and plant phytoliths from the Eastern Serengeti Plains, specifically the Acacia-Commiphora mosaics from Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania, as present-day analogue for the environment that was contemporaneous with the emergence of the genus Homo. We investigate whether phytolith assemblages from recent soil surfaces reflect plant community structure and composition with fidelity. The materials included 35 topsoil samples and 29 plant…
Acheulean prepared core technologies from the eastern Zimbabwe Escarpment, Maunganidze (Manicaland)
